Just learned that I have to be near Montreal for a family event one weekend in September. I've not been to Montreal and wish that we could stay longer but can't. So, even though we will have only one day to explore, we still want to go into the city. Does anyone have any thoughts on the one or two things that would be the best way to spend the few precious hours we'll have in Montreal? Thanks.

I go to Montreal yearly and love that city.
I would hang out in Old Montreal. Great shopping, cafes and restaurants.
Go to Claude Postel for coffee or Olives and Gourmand for a Brioche.
You can't go wrong hanging out in that section of the city.
You can also go along St Catherine street which has great shops.

We've had a couple of excellent family vacations that have included Montreal.

I don't know if you have kids, or what ages, but my first choices, if you like history at all, are the old city and the archeological museum (Pointe a Calliere). The museum is literally built on top of the oldest part of the city, and fascinated my 5 or 6 year old (as well as her parents).

There is also an excellent hand-on children's science museum nearby (Montreal Science Center), in a pedestrian waterfront area. Lots of street cafes, etc. as well as the possibility of a carriage ride (my daughter will never forget being invited up to actually drive the carriage, on the city streets...)

Get your haircut. Everyone in Montreal has great haircuts - you'll see. I don't know why or how, but they do. I got the best haircut of my life there.

I went to a restaurant on Rue St. Denis that was fabu. It was something like, THe News or The Bizz.

This is mussel season, so you must have mussels steamed in wine.

The Modern Art Museum has got some great stuff.

All good stuff above, plus:

Notre Dame Basilica--beautiful, simply beautiful
St. Viateur Bagels--like nothing you have ever had down here
Smoked Meat at Schwartz's (St. Laurent Blvd)--you will be astonished
Horse carriage ride around Old City (if you have kids even better)
Rollerblading on the waterfront near Old City (can rent blades there)
Chinese food in China Town (far different from taste of Chinese food here)
Hike around Mont Royale
Go to the Biodome

Native Montrealer here - all above good suggestions. Meli, it's so funny that you say that about haircuts but it is so true!
Whenever I go home I go here to eat:

It makes me feel like I've come home.
If I only had a few hours I would go to Old Montreal and wander around.

Sounds like it's Old Montreal, a carriage ride, and perhaps the archeological museum if there is time (after all, anything that fascinates a 5 or 6 year old is plenty good enough for me)

Thanks for the tips!

L'express is EXACTLY the restaurant I was talking about - wow, I wasn't even close! It is FABULOUS!
