My wife and I just moved out from Hoboken and are sorely missing our delibery options - especially as our kitchen has a few weeks of work left before we can cook. Suggestions for good take out, and any delivery? Thanks!

Ginger Taste in Milburn delivers. Darn good pan-asian food.

The best (but not exactly what I call good) Chinese delivery is actually in West Orange on South Valley Road in the Rite Aid strip mall and I think it's called Phoenix House.

We're big fans of Burnet BBQ (not your typical saucy BBQ - it's a dry rub, I believe). LOTS of delicious food for not a lot of money, I think they deliver to Maplewood. The only caveat I have is they always say 15 mins for pick up and we end up waiting at least another 10-15 after we get there anyway. It's on Springfield Ave.

I think Alleygater's referring to the place in the CVS strip mall...it's called Peking House. We've ordered from there several times...it's decent...pretty similar to what you'd get in Hoboken.

We just moved here from Hoboken too...so we've been looking for these types of places as well.

Thanks MC. You are correct it's called Peking House. And it's a CVS. It's not phenomenal food. But even merely edible Chinese food is hard to come by in our area (for some unknown reason). I also prefer Peking House to Bill and Harry's the much more known option in town. Peking House I find tastes better, is cheaper, and THEY DELIVER.

Jay's Grille on Springfield Ave delivers, and they have awesome burgers and shakes. Cluck U Chicken in SO delivers too.

I order chinese regularly from Hunan Wok and Panda Garden on Springfield Ave, and i believe they both deliver. If you're a food snob, you probably won't go for it, but i'm not, so... i do. =-) Bill & Harry's in Maplewood village is good too, although i think it's take out only.

We also sometimes pick up jamaican patties from Island Spice on Springfield Ave when we want something fast. They're awesome and always hot.

Oh, and i think Pinang Taste - a malaysian place in Springfield - also delivers to our area when they have a delivery guy.

Ordered from Ginger Taste recently for the first time in awhile and it seems to have gone way downhill. We ordered the mango chicken and chicken sambal, both of which we've had several times and liked. But this time they were both disgustingly oily and strangely flavorless. We won't be going back.

Also, Nunzios is much, much better than Burnet BBQ, IMO.

Carribean Cuisine is by far the best takeout place in our area and is a real treasure.

We also like Ariyoshi for sushi, and the new Indian place in Maplewood (Sona) is quite an improvement over Neelam, although they still seem to be working out some kinks (both of the dishes I tried were oversalted--and I like salt--and the chicken in both was overcooked to the point of rubberiness). But it has a diverse, interesting menu and fair prices, so it seems promising.

Parkwood Diner delivers too... We ordered from them about 4x a week last year.... (for lunch) .. I felt bad calling them in late June to inform them that school was letting out for the summer, and not to expect orders from us until September --

I miss them ! (and Pete, Fifi and Agnes!)

Fried chicken - pick up at Pathmark
Parkwood - good salads delivered
Ariyoshi - after having given up on sushi had a craving last night and it was DELICIOUS so my hopes are up for more sushi.
Ginger Taste - we used to order once a week but the last few times it was really terrible and so like I'm Only Sleeping we won't be going back. I miss JJ's so much. Also had very uneven experiences with Peking House.
Cranes
Tinga

Thank you all so much! We had tried Bill & Harry's and liked it, but I'm happy to see recs for other places to try. And most of these places we would never have thought of (like the Parkwood Diner), so this is extremely helpful.

Thanks again!

Take out: Shoprite in Livingston has a very large selection of very good takeout (grilled chicken, fish, vegetables, etc), far superior to Kings in my mind, as well as a large salad bar. Livingston Bagel and Deli (northfield Ave and South Livingston Ave) has excellent prepared food but is pricier. As mentioned above, New World Caterers in Maplewood is very good (also very pricey). Crane's on Maplewood Ave. has really good sandwiches and a dinner of the night after, I think, 4:30. Trattoria in the Village has really good Italian for takeout (they will graciously tell you all specials of the day if you ask when you call); it always takes longer than they say.

Delivery: Frank's on Valley Street does Italian delivery, including really reasonably priced chicken parm dinners. Tip the delivery guys well - my son is one of them!

Don't forget Church's Kitchen - they don't deliver but their fried chicken and sides are well worth picking up! They're on Springfield Ave. in Vauxhall. Nice people, place is immaculately clean.

I was craving Church's fried chicken and potato salad yesterday, absolutly was going to make my day. When I called, there was a message that they were on vacation until Sept. 11. Their food is great, so give them a try when they re-open. BTW, it is a family owned business and not the Church's Chicken chain.
