if you want to spend a full day at the beach on fire island on a sunday, my advice is to be at the ferry at 8 and leave at 3. local daytrippers won't go that early and people that weekend on the island will already be there. also, noone leaves the beach at 3, especially if it's a good beach day so you will beat the traffic that will start leaving from 5 on. |

Bring a can of gasoline, one of antifreeze, water, Parka and gloves for when winter sets in, plenty of freeze dried packaged foods that just need water (soak in gasoline if you run out of water) and pray for rain. Rain is the only chance you have to avoid the traffic. |

Traffic from LI on a Sunday especially the second to last weekend of the summer will be horrendous- just go with the expectation that it will take you 2 - 2 1/2 hrs to get home. You'd have to be on the road to head home by 2pm or so for it to be okay and even then it will still be heavy traffic. If you leave in the heaviest thick of things (5-8pm), it will probably take 3 hrs. Why not take the train? 1 hr to Bay Shore from Penn and then there is a little shuttle to the ferry for a few $ pp. Also, my guess is that you won't get a parking spot at the ferry on a Sunday- it usually fills up by late Friday night so you'll have to park in the town of Bay shore. All that being said, Fire island is one of my very favorite places. I spent many summers there and it is peaceful and beautiful (and most especially so when the weekend daytrippers leave on Sunday) |

There are roads that run parallel to the major highways. Look at maps to find them. Fire Island is also one of my favorite places but only in the off seasons. |

It's a very long trip for only one day. You'll spend more time on the road (and boat) than on the beach. Is there any way you can stay overnight on Long Island the night before? |

Train is probably your best bet except that weather ch. MSN.Com is calling for rain on Sunday. There probably is a web site for Long Island Rail Road. (LIRR) for schedule. |

Sunday morning traffic on eastbound LIE, if you're out of the Midtown Tunnel by 9:30AM, is not that bad. I've made it to Exit 53 from Midtown Tunnel in 40mins on Sunday morning before. Then another 20-25 mins to Bay Shore ferries. On the way back, expect serious traffic on all westbound highways (LIE, Southern State Parkway, etc.) starting from 2PM lasting till about 8:30PM. My suggestion is to take the last ferry back from FI, then go see a movie and/or have dinner, then hit the road home. |

60 minutes by train from Bay Shore. 5 minutes shuttle from train to ferry (20 minutes to walk) 20 minutes on ferry. |

I was out at Ocean Beach on Fire Island last week for a few days and I dreaded the drive. So, we bit the proverbial bullet and took the train[s]. It was very pleasant. It was worry and stress free. If you spend a wee bit of time planning train and ferry connections in advance (all schedules are available online) you should waste very little time standing around waiting for connections. I dozed, read and chatted on the train and arrived promptly and relaxed. No expensive parking, no traffic hassles, no Long Island Expressway. Be forwarned, though, they take cash only at the ferry and the ATM there charges $2.75 per transaction! At FI, it's $2.75 or more! So get your cash at home!

The Fire Island Lighthouse (a very favorite landmark of mine) is in between Robert Moses State Park and Kismet (the westernmost "town" on Fire Island) in the Fire Island National Seashore (State Preserve). Walk down the beach and turn North when you see all those naked people. |

Thirty pounds and 20 years ago, I was one of those nekkid people..... One of my friends was personally responsible for the ban on nude volleyball. Do they still enforce that rule? |

In 1979, there was a move to ban all nude sunbathing at the Fire Island National Seashore AND discussion to build the ill-fated Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant. I lived in Bay Shore at the time and asked an artist friend of mine to make a colorful design with a sunburst that said: NUDES NOT NUKES - Fire Island 1979 I had about 600 T-Shirts made up with the design and logo and spent a good deal of that summer at Fire Island, drinking and partying my way from Kismet to Cherry Grove, selling these shirts to individuals, to stores and on consignment. I'd head over to Kismet after work on Friday and head East with my duffle bag of shirts. On a good weekend, I didnt come home 'til Sunday and the shirts paid for all my water taxis, drinks and food. Dang, dems was da days. |

In the late 70's Mrs. Soda, our canine companion Mooshie, & I rented shares in houses on Birch Walk, and took on a full season rental for a wonderful little house on Cranberry Walk, both in Fair Harbor. Here's The Moosh on the Birch walk stairs:
