It seems the going rate for tips is 18-20 percent, 20-25 percent for excellent service. I'll be in Edmonton, Alberta in early November. I'm the two cities are close since they're both in Canada - maybe we could meet for dinner?

Seriously, I've heard Montreal is a fabulous place to visit and I hope you have a grand time. From what I've gleaned, the architecture is amazing. Enjoy!

Montreal in November is well off season, unless things have changed significantly since the mid '90s when I was there, you will find many things closed in the Old Town section.

That is not to imply you won't have fun, just don't expect touristy stuff.

Closed? Pour quoi? I'm surprised! Don't hardy Canadians travel to Montreal during the off season?

Dress very warmly (long underwear even). We spent T'giving weekend in Montreal, and I was woefully underdressed. Bring snow boots.
