I am looking for suggestions for a food related trip for the first week in October. We had originally planned on going to Europe (thanks to all for the Prague/Budapest help), but have decided to scale back for this vacation. Ideally, we're thinking somewhere we can drive to, and we would love to find a festival or something to go to. We once went in March to the Maple Festival in NH, and we made a trip to VT for the Ben and Jerry's factory, and we had a great time at both. Seeing by then I will be more than five months pregnant, wine tasting is out this time. Other ideas? I know there have to be some foodies out there with some tasty vacation experiences to share. Thanks! |

try checking out foodreference.com. Its a fun site that lists a lot of food facts and trivia as well as a global monthly listing of food festivals. October has a lot of wine festivals, oyster festivals, and apple festivals, but there were some other fun and interesting ones (including the Chatsworth Cranberry Festival down in the NJ Pine Barrens..we went last year, and it was fun but we'd highly recommend a cranberry bog tour out of Whitesbog). By the way, today was National Peach Pie Day as well as the Feast of St. Owen of Rouen, the patron saint of innskeepers (someone is out there looking out for Art). On this day in food history in 1869, the first US patent for a waffle iron was issued; in 1981, the eventual inventor of Styrofoam was born; and in 1969, in New York and LA, "Alice's Restaurant" premiered. And finally, the food quote of the day... “My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four. Unless there are three other people.” Orson Welles, actor, director, producer, writer (1915-1985)

Have you ever checked out www.chowhound.com ? They have regional message boards and can find out cool local restaurants, etc. for every region. We went to the outer banks, nc, this summer, and via chow hound (and MOL) we knew EXACTLY where we'd eat - we were really happy with the recommendations. |

I'd go up to Massachusetts and head up to Cape Ann and visit all the fried clam shacks. Do a Whale Watch out of Gloucester. Eat at Woodman's and Tom Shea's in Essex. Go to Rockport. Go to Boston for a night. Maybe also to Newburyport and Portsmouth, NH. http://www.newburyportchamber.org/ http://www.ipswichma.com/ http://www.capeannvacations.com/ http://www.thetrustees.org/pages/249_appleton_farms.cfm http://www.goodaleorchards.com/ www.hammondcastle.org drive though Beverly Farms, Manchester, Magnolia to Gloucester.

Thanks for all the ideas. I LOVE chowhound.com and think it is a great resource. And foodreference.com also had some great things to plan ahead for, but nothing seemed to fit the bill for the week we are looking. But there are certainly plenty more events at other times to keep in mind. Algebra, the Inn at Castle Hill looks beautiful, and will go on the list to research some more. Any idea if October is a good whale watching month? And are the leaves near peak during that early part of October in that area or will we miss it? Melicious, I'm a California native, and have been only briefly to Napa, but I think we may wait on that until we can take advantage of all the wineries while we are out there. It seems like I am constantly reading about new restaurants out there, and would love to go back. All the chowhound reading is making me hungry... |

I may be wrong but I think there's some sort of an apple festival in Ithaca, NY. My uncle invited me a couple of years ago but I couldn't make it. He said it happens every year. Good luck and have fun wherever you wind up going! |
