We seem to be in a culinary rut. Does anyone have an interesting NJ restaurant suggestion that's NOT in Maplewood or South Orange, easy to get to (we'd travel for a max of 30 minutes), ethnic (but NOT Thai) and not expensive? Thanks for any and all help with this quest. |

From a past post: 'On So. Valley road in West Orange a quick trip on Ridgewood Road or Scotland Road to W. Orange will take you there (maybe a 10 minute drive). So good... and good choices if you don't eat meat. They also serve non-Ethiopian food, but I haven't tried it. http://www.harrarcafe.com/ The ambiance isn't as nice as Mesob in Montclair, but it's closer and cheaper and just as good if not better.' I've gone and thouroughly enjoyed the meal. On the other hand there IS a F2F at the Parkwood in Maplewood at 7PM tonight... |

The first time I had Ethiopian food, I wasn't that enamored of it, so this wouldn't be my first choice, but thanks very much for the suggestion and for responding, Scully. Any others? |

Mompou, a relatively new tapas bar on Ferry Street in the Ironbound. www.mompoutapas.com I've only been there for lunch, but it's a great room and has a nice atmosphere. Good food, also. They received a nice write-up in the New York Times a couple of months ago. |

Thanks, Nohero and Soda! Both look terrific. Looks like we're going to try Mompou and we'll keep Blu in mind for next time. |

OK - reporting in from Mompou: We found parking right away nearby, so getting there was hassle-free. Very nice space, though very noisy during happy hour; attentive service, good food. Especially good was the Tortilla Herminia - swiss chard, onions, potatoes and garlic whiskey sauce in an egg-y base. I especially liked the scallops basque. There are lots of interesting things on the menu which I look forward to trying another time. We tried a few of the desserts. The hands-down winner was their sponge cake, which is a variation of tres leches cake. Good margaritas, too. Oh, and it really wasn't that expensive - about $36/person including drinks and tip. Thanks again for the recommendation, Nohero. |
