It probably depends on when you go there. I stopped there last year coming back from the Octoberfest at the Deutscher club. They had a band that was really LOUD! I was there a couple of times this month when my regular watering hole was closed for some renovations. The first time was not crowded at all and pretty quiet, a little Sinatra on the jukebox, but that's OK. You could read a book or have a conversation. The 2nd time was a litle more crowded, but 2 girl's softball teams came in for a post-game celebration and it got pretty noisy. I prefer a quiet bar. I don't know about the food but the menu looks like typical pub grub.

The men's room is in need of some serious work. On the plus side, they have Liberty Ale from the Anchor brewery on tap, so it's worth a look. I also gave the owner some info on the Cricket Hill brewery which is a local Essex county brewery. I hope that he gives them a try.
Cheers

I think the whole place is in need of an update.
I went there to listen to a band I'd seen perform at the pub in Maplewood. They played acoustic in Maplewood and electric in Liberty Tavern, so it was MUCH louder, but the music was good and if you like that, it's lots of fun.

Typical pub grub, nothing fancy, good beer, and not too expensive, but I prefer St James's Gate.

3ringale, as a fellow fan of Cricket Hill's beer, I thought I'd let you know if you didn't already that Tiffany's Restaurant in Union had it on tap last time I went there not long ago. They also had another beer called Tiffany's Ale or something similar that was also brewed by Cricket Hill.

Tom N,
I had heard that Tiffany's had dropped Cricket Hill. I go to the brewery in Fairfield once or twice a month on Friday. They do a tour and tasting starting at 5 PM. You can also purchase beer right from the cold room. It's a pretty good time. I never tire of looking at those fermenters!

Cheers

Say it 'aint so! My wife and I were more than surprised to see CH as a beer selection there and quite happy about it but I'm not surprised if it is no more. It's tough to generate enough sales in a place like that for a micro to survive.

I recently came across this new place while looking online and while it's not as close by I'll sure to stop in next time I'm in Jersey City. They don't serve any NJ local brews but have quite an impressive selection. Since it's a more upscale place than Tiffany's, they should do well with it.

Tom N,
I could be wrong about Tiffany's, but I will ask Rick Reed the next time I go to the brewery. He is a pretty affable guy. I brought him a bottle of my home-made mead a month or two back and he seemed to be genuinely impressed. You should try to get to the Friday tour sometime. All 4 beers are on tap and he also has his Dopplebock which was not widely available.

The Lighthorse Tavern has a very impressive beer list. I've tried all but 2 or 3 of them. I don't know whether I should be proud or embarassed of that accomplishment.

One of the best beer bars in the state is Andy's Corner Bar in Bogota. They treat their beers with care. Not much in the way of food, when I was there last month, they sent out for a couple of pizzas and everyone served themselves. Definitely worth the trip.

I haven't been to Andy's since we moved from Bergen County but it was always enjoyable. Besides the great selection, you always get friendly service and the little extras like the pretzels hanging off the skewer when you were served a pint. Last time we were there was for a Heavyweight Brewing night and I won a pint glass in one of the giveaway drawings. You sound like you keep in touch with NJ beer happenings and are probably aware that Heavyweight has ceased operations (or will soon) so they can open their own brewpub.

I've been meaning to visit Cricket Hill for a while and your bringing it up has renewed that as a goal.

Is this the place next to the 78E onramp in Union? The place that looks like it should just be a house?

That's the place. I understand that the wife of the former owner still lives on the 2nd floor. As I mentioned above, the Anchor Liberty Ale is very worthwhile.
Cheers
