So my son and I have been making a tour of some of New Jersey's finest hot dogerias this summer, to compare and contrast (he would like to write a hot dog review since a pizza review contest was part of his last birthday party). We've been to and can recommend for various reasons: Amazing Hot Dog; Rutt's Hut; Hot Dog Johnny's; Galloping Hill; Syd's. On the radar still are possible trips to Jimmy Buff's and a potential doubleheader at Tommy's and Jerry's, three doors from one another in Elizabeth. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

thanks Papayagirl...seems like we're on target with our choices and our ratings...I think the Jerry's/Tommy's trip is on for lunch one day this week. Dickie Dee's in Newark was also on the potential list..good to see it listed on the chowhound thread. |

I grew up on Tommy’s and Jerry’s. I prefer Tommy’s. Don't just get a hotdog. Do yourself a big favor and get the Italian hotdog from Tommy’s. Once you eat it, no other hotdog is compare. If you do decide on a regular hotdog, you must get a cup of potatoes to go with it. My brother always says that he wished that he had grown up without Tommy's because it has ruined all the hotdogs he has eaten since. Also, between those two hotdog stands you will see my father's office. |

the Italian hotdog at Tommy's is on the "must have" list -- he makes his own sausage daily I read...I also have ordered fries at some of these establishments but alas, the kids just dont appreciate "fries with". |

Whenever I head out towards western NJ via Rt 22, I always stop at Toby's Cup. Strange place that reminds me of The Palace in Asbury Park. Also try Windmill hot dogs. They are a Jersey shore fixture but have a location in Westfield. I notice that some supermarkets have been carrying the dogs lately. Just came across this great site while looking up Toby's Cup: http://www.hollyeats.com/JerseyDogs.htm

And while in Long Branch, stop by The Windmill.
http://www.hollyeats.com/HotDogPage.htm Personally, I'm a big fan of Heid's of Liverpool (Syracuse, NY) made by Hoffman Hotdogs (actually Hoffman Sausage, I guess) of Syracuse. Awesome hot dogs...and they sell them at the deli at the Wegman's in Wodbridge. I purchased a bunch at the start of the summer for the grill....mmmmm. |

My folks are from Hudson County and grew up on Callahan's Hot Dogs. A couple of them closed, but allegedly there is still one on Rt 46 in Little ferry. My inlaws, who are both from Paterson, swear by all of the ones up that way - Falls View is one that they often mention. |

Hank: Do the kid a favor and double up on dogs at Callahan's Roadstand and Hiram's Roadstand - both on Palisades Ave in Ft. Lee. They are basically right next to each other. Personally I prefer Callahan's. |

Go to hollyeats.com and click on the Hot Dog Page. NJ has its own page there! My boyfriend and I take spur of the moment weekend trips to sample the hot dogs of NJ. Dickie Dee's & Rutts Hutt are 2 of my favorite, though totally different genres of hot dogs. Enjoy! |

Hank- do try Texas Weiners across the street from Home Depot and if you are going to Jimmy Buff's I recommend the one on Springfield Ave in Irvington...unless he has died in the last 6 months, Louis runs it and he was there the day that it opened in the 60's. |

we're going to do the Tommy's/Jerry's combo today...and if we can fit it in (literally, not time-wise), Uncle Mike's in Kenilworth for peach ice cream. I believe Callahan's has closed (someone named Callahan told me that as well)...and BGS, my son did not like Texas Weiners across from Home Depot, so we've never been back. Its funny you mentioned Jimmy Buff's because someone just mentioned to me the other day about a 74 year old guy who owned/ran a Jimmy Buff's who died recently...they were surprised that you can be in a hot dog joint day in and day out and live to be that old! |

Morrisa..since Im clearly at fault, what do I have to do to show Im sorry...flowers? Went to Tommy's and Jerry's today (Mayor McCheese, is your father Sanchez, Sanchez or Santoloquido?..or do I have the wrong office between Tommy's and Jerry's?)...the boys (my son and his buddy) and I liked the hot dog at Jerry's better than at Tommy's. I did have the sausage with the works at Tommy's though...excellent bread, fried sliced potatoes, peppers and onions. My one complaint -- the onions could have/should have been sauteed, and they were piled on a lot higher than the peppers. Tommy's and Jerry's are the anti-Hot Dog Johnny's. HDJ's has a little playground and nice picnic benches and flower boxes and the river running behind it. T's and J's are walk-up windows, no seating, the smallest of ledges to put stuff down and its on a busy corner in Elizabeth (not menacing but fortunately the boys didnt ask me what the "Go Go Dancers" place was on the opposite corner). The hot dog road goes on forever and the heartburn never ends (to paraphrase a song)...we'll try some other spots. |

ok..you've broken this dog lover....you can buy syd's dogs by the pound. Take'em home and grill them up at your own BBQ's. Chicks dig this stuff. Lately, with all the construction taking plave at the MLB Mall, Syd's is looking tired. Hopefully this will change. did I mention sweet potato fries?.....excuse me while I wipe the drool from my chin. LOVE this thread. |

Brooklyn's Famous on mainstreet in West Orange. Sabaret dogs, but elaborate dressing combinations. The same is true of their french fry selection. I go regularly. J.B. |

Hank, he is Sanchez (I guess the first one because he was there first chronologically. The other two are my uncles. The plain hotdogs are probably better at Jerry's. But the Italian hotdog at Tommy's is the best sandwich ever. Did they have hot sauages? That is the best. They usually have a sign up on a paper plate outside if they have hot in stock. |

I think the Callahan's in Fort Lee closed - but my folks (aforementioned Callhan's junkies) said they believe the one on 46 in Little Ferry is still opened. I loved going with my mom when we were little. It's the only place she'd ever drink YooHoo and it made her seem.... I don't know....fun? Sad commentary! |

Have you covered all the local places such as Manny's Texas Wieners on Springfield Avenue across from Home Depot? (also mentioned by BGS above.) I think the hot dog basket there is great, although I try not to go very often. Sometimes my car takes over when I am driving past and turns into their parking lot. They have good onion rings too. If you are doing more traveling, you might consider a trip to Key West where I remember the hot dogs sold on the 7-mile bridge as very tasty and from what I have been told those sold at the Hogs Breath Saloon (http://www.hogsbreath.com/) are outstanding.

OK, here's a tip. When you're driving west on 78, make a stop at the last exit in NJ to Charlie's in Alpha, NJ. It's about five minutes off of 78. Go off the last ramp heading west. Go to first traffic light. Go right after light, and straight onto "Alternate 22" to first light, take left at 519 south. Go down the little hill and up, look for the PNC Bank. Right just past that, and left over the train track. Charlie's is down the road on the left. It's a pool hall. The interest value is the sauce. Charlie is of Hungarian background, and his father took an old building and made it into a pool hall. His Mom decided to sell hot dogs. She had an old Hungarian view of how to make hot dog sauce. It is truly out of this world. It's so terrific, it has a website: http://www.hollyeats.com/CharliesPoolRoom.htm |
