We’re looking at getting into Portland ME on Labor Day around lunch time. I’d like to take a passenger ferry out to one of the Islands for happy hour. Any suggestions for restaurants out on the islands?

Years ago I stayed at the Chebeague Inn on Chebeague Island and the restaurant there was incredible. Beautiful place.

Either Great Diamond or Little Diamond Island (sorry, I forget which) has a wonderful restaurant with a bar, great food and the atmosphere cannot be beat. There is ZERO development on the island (apart from a few homes and this one restaurant), so it really feels like a secret, private place, a hidden treasure. I took a private boat there from the other island where we were staying, but I bet the Portland Ferry would go there too.

What about Peak's Island? You can take a ferry from the terminal. The ride is about 20 minutes. In August we tried the newer inn that has a restaurant right at the top of the hill after getting off the ferry. There are a few other restaurants to consider along that street, too, which might be more happy hour oriented.

Juju, Yea that was the one I found. Just looking for a beer and some chowder, our time in Portland is limited. Do you know how often the ferrys run?

The Peak's Island ferry runs about every hour. It is more of a commuter ferry so it may run more frequently during commuting hours. You can also drive right onto it but the cost for that is something like $60. You're better off parking and walking on. All the restaurants on the island (maybe 3 of them?) are easily walkable. Just be careful when you park near the ferry terminal in Portland. Those signs are for real. If you don't follow the rules, you will get a ticket and towed. Happens all the time. Even on rainy Sundays.

The name of the inn that I can't remember did have a memorable clam chowder and a good selection of beers. If you sit on the porch, you'll have a great view of Casco Bay.

We’re leavening Rockport(Rockland?) about 10am and should be to Portland around 12:30. We will park at the hotel http://www.eastlandparkhotel.com/. And then walk to Commercial Street. I was stationed in that god awful dry dock on the water about 10 years ago and want to see it again. We’ll grab the ferry, walk around Peak Island a little, and then head back. Figuring that will put us back at the hotel around 5 ish, shower and then get dinner.

I remember a boat on the water there that had great lobster (Italian name may start wit a ‘D’) the name escapes me. Then hit some of my old haunts around town for drinks.

Monday we will need to leave around 11am so we’re home to get the dog. Any idea of a place to get Lobster Omelets?

Peak's Island was where we stayed, lots of friendly local places, I didn't see much fine dining a la Great Diamond but that doesn't really sound like what you're looking for.

THE place to get breakfast in Portland is Becky's Diner, you see their bumper stickers (Becky's Diner: Nothin' Finah!) all over town. Not sure if they have lobster as an omelet filling, but it would be worth a call to ask; everything else there is delish!!!

Becky's 390 commercial st, that should be easy enough. No lobster omelet though, I checked the menu :-(

I think we may just have dinner at the Portland Lobster Co. after the ferry ride. I think that's what we're after.
