Aside from his arrest for serving sangria without a license (and I've read all about that, it's not what I'm looking to discuss) how is the food and the ambience there? Would anyone recommend or not recommend it?

Was there about a year ago. Found the ambience a bit pretentious - too hip to be cool sort of thing, but the food was quite good.

Just went on Friday night - I agree with gt - the ambience is kind of annoying. It's loud and over the top, and the waiters treat you like you're lucky to be there. However, I did really enjoy the food, and the prices are reasonable. The tapas were interesting and very flavorful, and the roast pork was more tender and juicy than many I've had. The sangria was WAY lame - very watery. On our way out we learned why - the shipment of Franzia boxed wine was sitting outside the door!

I agree. I don't like the atmosphere very much, but the food is pretty good.

FYI - Not very kid-friendly either.

Food is good; service/atmosphere not so much. We waited a long time for our food to come and it was too loud and crowded to enjoy the meal. I wouldn't go back...

My roommate and I really enjoyed Cuban Pete's. It is loud and crowded but that was partly what we liked about it. The service was mediocre and the food was good. You can also bring as much of your own booze as you want. From what I understand, they boil out the alcohol in the sangria so that the owner won't have any more problems . I've also heard that the desserts are full of alcohol but was too full to try any. Enjoy!

B-girl - they're not even paying adult customer friendly. I suspect that Ncakes is a tad younger than some of us & this is who CP caters to.

I'm just curious, if ncakes is right that they boil off all of the alcohol, then wouldn't they legally be required to state on the menu or prominently that the Sangria is non-alcoholic. I feel that it was most certainly false advertising if it's true. I most certainly wouldn't have bought it if I knew that.

Wow, I had no idea about Cuban Pete's alcohol woes.

I thought the Sangria was pretty weak, but I thought it was because they simply didn't make it right.

GT- You're probably right .

As for the Sangria.. I asked the waiter if it was alcoholic because 3 or 4 pitchers later neither of us had the slightest head buzz. He said there was alcohol in it but a very low %.

I was there recently and heard the sangria barely had any alcohol, so I had a glass!
They will add alcohol to it, if you BYO

It was loud but I enjoyed the food and would go back. Just not on a Friday night.

The food is good, but it's always crowded and loud. Also, their menu doesn't state that the sangria is nearly alcohol-free. We sent the first pitcher back, thinking it wasn't made right, but the second one tasted just as bad. The least the waiter could have done is told us. I learned at a later date about their alcohol policy. It's good food, but there are better places in Montclair.
