Hey there. First weekend in the burbs and DH realized we have gone to the Gate 5 times since we started our house search. Now that we are here we would like to expand our horizons a bit. Is there anything in walking distance (1-2 miles) to get a drink? We are off of Prospect and Madison in Maplewood. Thanks! |

Cant'anni has a liquor license, as does Here's 2 The Arts. Both in Maplewood Village. The problem here is the limited amount of liquor licenses. I think the two I mentioned above, as well as The Gate, are the only 3 in Maplewood. And the one at Here's 2 The Arts is the first new one in many years, from what I understand. |

What's the name, O'Rielly's on Millburn Ave? Walk down the hill to Valley and turn left. Go to Millburn Ave and turn right. The place is on hte right. |

You are within fairly easy walking distance of South Orange village as well, where there are a number of establishments available including Bunny's, Gaslight, Cryan's, Papillon 25, among others. Enough to even do a mini bar-hop, actually.

It would probably take me an hour to walk from Prospect and Madison to SO Village. But i admit, power walking isn't my forte. And yeah, Verjus has a liquor license, but it isn't exacty a place i'd tumble into on a thursday evening for a couple of beers. (A mimosa on a sunday afternoon, sure.) Then again, maybe that's not what you want. Or maybe lots of people do just that. There's Hawk's Tavern on Springfield Ave, where i've never been. Not terribly close either though. Unfortunately, having to drive to bars is one of the basic downsides of living in the burbs. Even having the Gate, etc. in the village isn't really the norm. Probably why a lot of the houses we looked at when we first bought had bars in the basements! |

I know you specifically said walking distance but you can always walk to Maplewood and take the train to South Orange, Millburn, or Summit if you want to venture slightly further out without driving. Millburn has Martini's which is just a hop from the train station. I'm not sure who else has a liquor license there. Maybe Charlie Brown's? Summit has The Office and Brix 67 (?) right next to the train station. Also Winberries and I'm sure some others that I can't think of right now. |

I personally think that Verjus would be a lovely place to walk in to and have a drink-they do have a bar...I do not think that it is a stumble in kind of place.... |

But if you spend too much time in the bar, you might just stumble out! The upside to Ver Jus is it is a quiet bar with some wonderful food, plus Jane and Charlie's good company (if it is a slow night). You will not get a lot of bar stool company, however, as most go there to eat a sit-down dinner. I have not sat at their bar myself, but I have had many a fine wine and excellent meal there. The Spanish red that Charlie sells by the glass (name escapes me now) is particularly good, and his bottle prices are very reasonable for a restaurant. |

Ver Jus has some good Scotch, if that matters. The Gate has some good Whiskey, of course. Gaslight is a brewery and has good beers. In Summit, (drive or take a taxi, or a limo?) Huntley tavern has nice wines, and a bar with some hard to find liquors (Hendrick's Gin for example.) I'd bet Martini's in Milburn also takes it's drinks seriously. I'm surprised no one mentioned Voro, in South Orange. I'm not a regular, but it's a short walk from the train station, and when it's busy, you might think you're in NYC. The upstairs bar has giant beds to lounge in. Can you say, "bedroom community-bar?" Also, buy liquor and invite people over. That's the suburban way! P.L. me if you need guests. J.B. |

papa It shouldn't take you an hour to walk from there to South Orange Village. I had friends who use to live on Parker and it would olny take them about 20 minutes. Same for those of us who would walk from the Montrose Ave Ridgewood Road area of South Orange to Columbia. |

You could always walk to the train and take it to Summit and do some barhopping there. I believe there are a few drinking establishments. |

I can think of nothing more fun than tying one on and then walking 25 minutes (up hill no less) home at night. |

The walk home can stink, but it depends on how many you've actually had. Plus, it's better than driving yourself into a tree (or worse). In any case, this is why I have 3 different local taxi numbers programmed into my cell phone...if you don't feel like walking, just select one! |

From the intersection of Prospect and Madison in Maplewood to the corner of Sloan and SO Ave in SO is 1.6 miles according to Google Maps.

I am 0.9 miles from there and it's 10-15 minute walk... 10 downhill and 15 up. And I am no power walker. Also it is 0.8 miles from Prospect & Madison to Maplewood & Highland which is about where the Gate is. So figure twice as far to the SO bars. It's really not that bad! One of the best parts of our area is that you can walk to various areas for eats and drinks! |

Okay, i'd like to ammend my prior statement. It takes me approximately 25 minutes to walk 1 mile downhill from my house to the maplewood train station. Add 5 minutes to go the same distance on flat ground since i wouldn't get the same rolling start, plus another 60% for that extra .6 mile. That means it would take me approximately 48 minutes for me to get from ciao's house to Bunnys. Then there's the fact that i'm pregnant, which adds probably another 12 minutes at least, but you guys didn't know that. |

Alleygater- That last comment had me in stitches. We have been enjoying that long uphill walk quite a few times now. I think the earth shifted right when we signed the closing papers. We walked it a lot before we bought, but it has suddenly gotten much steeper!!! It's good to know there are some other options out there. I think we might be taking the train to a few spots... |
