After dining in a few places in town a number of times I've encountered now on more than one trip cockroaches in a few well liked establishments.

I was never alone when it happened. The people at both places (on two separate visits each) didn't seem to make a big deal about it, however, it has stopped me from eating in town if I can help it.

I don't want to name both places because I don't want to trash them online. A lot of people are very happy going there, and I don't know if its just me. Did I just happen to hit a rare coincidence in two separate restaurants on days that were a couple months apart?

Am I the only one who's seen the little buggers walking on the walls?

I'm pretty certain cockroaches live in all restaurants whether you see them or not.

Although these crazy things freak me out more than any other but/insect, after living in Manhattan, I have accepted the above as fact.

A few years ago a mouse walked right up to my scotch on the bar at a Maplewood establishment, decided it wasn't to his liking, and departed.

I guess we'll just turn our heads next time then.

As long as they don't crawl all over our food we should be fine. Right?

This isn't good. I left Manhattan for this very reason. Maybe we can get them to start spraying if we put our minds to it.

Saw one in a Millburn restaurant too. Guess these roaches ignore town lines and are willing to consolidate services.

The more important question is....Are they paying taxes like the rest of us? If not, we really need to do something about it.

When I lived in Manhattan, I actually dialed 911 one evening after hearing my neighbor screaming next door in a way that had me convinced she was being attacked or murdered. Find out, she did that because she saw a cockroach...

Ciao - If it makes you feel any better, I don't think you'll find cockroaches in residences in Maplewood like you see regularly in even the cleanliest of apartments in Manhattan. But....restaurants are a different story. There's just only so much you can do, no matter where the restaurant is located.

Not to be overly squeemish or contrarian, but I did a lot of restaurant work in my college days, and my experience led me to believe that restaurants that really make an effort to keep the place clean, and that have regular maintenance spraying, do not have roaches.

I wouldn't stop going to a restaurant based on one episode, but I would certainly mention it to the manager. And I would definitely give it up if I continued to see the little devils.

Some places let you pick the one you want and then prepare it for you.

I failed to mention earlier that I worked in restaurants since I was 15. Its the way I was able to pay my way through university. I cannot remember a single day at any of the places I was at where I came across a just one cockroach. Not one. Maybe its because we kept those places spotless. We cleaned up at the close every single day. I remember the floors of both places were so clean you could eat off them.

All I know is I've never experienced eating in a restaurant and coming across cockroaches that were walking around the dining area on more than one trip. What are the chances that months apart they still had not solved their cockroach problem?

I'm sorry but it disgusts me. Again, I will not frequent them any time soon which is sad because at one place in particular I would order from them at least once a week. The people who own these places are very pleasant and hence the reason why I will not name them directly. I've seen a lot that can go on in a kitchen however keeping your establishment free from these critters is vital to your life and the lives of people you serve.

This is off of an informational website on Cockroaches:

Cockroaches
by F.B. Peairs 1

Quick Facts...

* Cockroaches are associated with filth and unsanitary conditions.
* Known to carry disease organisms, they have not been tied to major disease outbreaks in the United States.

Well, if they're associated with filth and unsanitary conditions then how are they preparing my food and in what order are they keeping it.

I guess a lot of people here have not caught many of the episodes of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares on BBC America. Man is that guy a stickler for keeping a place clean.

Yeah, in thinking about this a little further, I would be freaked if one came into the dining area of a restaurant. I guess I'd have to agree with that.

When it comes to public places, I kind of lump cockroaches in the same category as germs. I know they may be there, but I don't like to think about it. Otherwise, I'd never eat out and would never ride the subway.

roach

Cockroach Disease

Cockroaches have been shown experimentally to transport a number of pathogenic bacteria and viruses on their legs and bodies. They have been found to carry the pathogens that cause tuberculosis, cholera, leprosy, dysentery, and typhoid, as well as over 40 other bacteria (like salmonella) or viruses that can cause disease.

Thus, cockroaches, through their nocturnal feeding habits, represent a serious potential health problem. Their presence should be eliminated or diminished in dwellings and food establishments.

Got a better one Soda…

Remember this story in the “Creepshow” trilogy?

They're Creeping Up On You!: A cruel, miserly businessman (played by screen legend E.G. Marshall) is terrified and disgusted by roaches and other assorted insects that are suddenly pervading his supposedly antiseptic, germfree apartment.

WARNING¡ Not for the faint hearted.

I should remind Spanish Inquisitor that scotch is an acquired taste and just because that particular mouse didn't care for his drink, not all mice lack diversity in their range of preferred alcoholic drinks.

I just felt I should get that out there so people didn't have a negative opinion of mice as being uncultured.

I had them crawl out of my salads at some well-known NYC restaurants. There was a steak house in my old neighborhood that had roaches crawling over the banquettes. I never went back, but it kept getting rave reviews in the papers.

There was another very famous restaurant on the corner where I lived. One night, I was walking my dog at some ungodly hour (about 2 a.m.) and the restaurant must have been fumigating, because the entire sidewalk and street on that corner was covered in a mass of roaches/waterbugs. Literally, the street looked as if it was moving. Yucch. That's another restaurant I never, ever went back to.

My grandfather used to have a small, diner-type restaurant (years ago, in Brooklyn) and he always told us, "If you like eating out, don't go into the kitchen". I guess Grandpa knew what he was talking about.

I was at a business lunch when a roach crawled up the white shirt sleve of the waiter. I didn't want to say anything since my client selected the restaurant. Needless to say, I picked at my food the entire time.

A long, long time ago, when I lived in Flatbush, my apartment was overrun with the big things that we called waterbugs. My brother-in-law, then a fearless and enterprising age 15 or so, caught one and brought it to the Museum of Natural History. They told him that there is no such thing as "waterbugs." Those big bugs are big cockroaches. Roaches are very adaptable and will vary in size accordng to the size of the openings available to them. Mine were black or reddish brown, and some of them must have been two inches long. And big! There was a false wall in the kitchen of my apartment, and the roaches were coming from behind it.

For all the years I've lived in South Orange, when I go into my kitchen at night, and I turn on the light, and I don't see any roaches, I think how much I love my house.

I'm not sure about the libel laws of trashing a well-known establishment on a public message board, but I'll tell you they were both in the Gramercy Park area (I used to live off of Irving Place). One is still in business, I'm not sure about the other. If it's out of business, I'll post the name.

I personally have had lots of experience in restaurants and with cockroaches in them. Their presence in a restaurant is absolutely related to cleanliness. These places should be spraying monthly/weekly, etc - whatever needs to be doen to get rid of the problem. I also don't understand why the cold feet on advertising who keeps a dirty kitchen. Please PL me with the names of all of these establishments! If you have mentioned it to the manager and they haven't done anything about it, then it is their own fault.

Again, I would love the names of these places (privately if need be) so that I can avoid them. Can you imagine having one on your sleeve and bringing it back to your HOME? These places should be avoided until they get their act together. It is absolutely unacceptable.
