I think I will become a regular poster here. Both DH and my parents are coming to see our new home for a long weekend. - at the same time. I tried Lorena's but they don't take parties bigger than four on the weekend. We are looking for a nice place to take them for a Saturday night dinner - preferably not a national chain restaurant but something a bit more swanky and unique. Also any recs for after dinner activities would be appreciated...Thanks!

Cafe Monet in Millburn. Excellent food and atmosphere.

What is this Ironbound area? Is it safe/accessible by train? Sorry for not knowing much but just moved here.

Terra and Centanni in Maplewood Village. Verjus on Springfield Ave. Cafe Arugula in South Orange.

Those are where we take my parents and other relatives when they come to visit.

If you want to stay local and you were trying for Lorena's, definitely try Verjus. If you're willing to go to Montclair, I highly recommend Blu.

The Ironbound is safe, and Ferry street is a short walk from Newark Penn Station, which you can get to from New York Penn Station or from the Secaucus transfer, if you're shy about driving. A couple of weeks ago we ate at Mompou in the Ironbound.

Is there a place where all the local restaurants have pictures and reviews/access to their websites (like menupages)?

Basilico in Millburn is excellent. Definitely make a reservation though.

Ironbound is where the portugese and brazilian restaurants are located in Newark. It's almost sort of a tourist destination for Newark. It's a few blocks closer to the water from Newark Penn Station (so I think of it as BEHIND the train station). As the crow flys (also known as driving through Irvington via Springfield Avenue, also known as the "dangerous way to go") it's literally like 5 miles from us. Just use google maps and get directions to Ferry Street.

why not stay local. Terra, Verjus and Cent Anni are all excellent! Terra is my favorite-its a small place so call for reservations.

You must also include Antonella's in South Orange.

I heartily agree with Centanni. We recently took my husband's family there for my in-laws' 50th wedding anniversary. His entire family was thrilled with the food and is still raving about it.

Chris was an amazing sport about the whole thing (allowed us to pull off a "musical surprise" for my husband's parents). It was a wonderful experience. You made us look good, Chris! Thank you!!

Verjus has excellent food but somehow the restaurant setting is not as up to par with the quality of the dishes or even to a certain extent the prices. But if you're a foodie regardless of buses halting loudly just outside it's fantastic.

Cafe Monet is smaller and has very good grub as well. The atmosphere is more balanced and appealing than Verjus imo.

how nice do you want to go? Seranade in Chatham is tops and David Drake in Rahway (yes, Rahway) is really really good and has some great touches...it's definitely got some swank and uniqueness going for it. You can also venture to Hoboken to Amanda's or Cucharamama, to name just two. A lot of Hoboken restaurants (including some of the best) have amazing early bird specials, even on weekends.

Le Rendez-vous in Kenilworth is only 15 minutes away and very high quality.

Try Passione in Montclair. BYOB, still easy to get a reservation. Great French food. The chef actually did a stint at Le Rendez-vous.
