I'm looking for a hotel/spa type of place for a retreat for about 20 people -- in January. Should have really nice accommodations, a good restaurant or two, maybe a spa, and be far from it all yet within 1-1.5 hours from the city. Any ideas?

Ocean Place Resort
Long Branch, NJ

A spa and restaurant on-site [as well as a cool bar with nice billiard tables]with add'l restaurants and shopping next door. I don't know if you'd call the rooms "really nice" however, we weren't in the rooms much...

Others on the radar:

Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank
North Maple Inn in Basking Ridge
The Spa at Doral Forrestal in Princeton

North Maple Inn houses a pretty nice restaurant, too.

Try Mohonk Mountain House. They just added a spa this season. Less than 2 hrs from here.

SO Ref. I stayed at Ocean Place Resort last year, and wasn't at all impressed by the rooms. They were a tad on the shabby side.

I just planned an event at Tarrytown House in Westchester - it was really beautiful, but I am not sure if they have a spa. Our previous year's events were at Mohonk, Doral Arrowwood, Ocean Place and Gurney's (all mentioned here!) We were really happy dealing with Tarrytown House.

Hey JG, would you say Tarrytown is high end? This is for our management team. I've done Arrowwood, we definitely want a notch above that.

I'd second the Mohonk recommendation - my wife and I went there for our first time earlier this year. A great retreat, and the spa is wonderful.

I'm glad you like my restaurant Soda. The North Maple Inn is a good place to get away from the office and get work done.

I'm not too sure how to define "high-end" but I would say that it is a step above Arrowwood (which I actually haven't been to in several years.) The grounds and estate are beautiful, and the rooms are very very nice. I thought the food was fabulous, but I did catch wind of some complaints by my co-workers - I guess you can't please everyone! They were also really great to work with - very accomodating and professional.

Not sure when this is going to actually open (probably not in time) but Richard Branson is opening a luxury hotel/spa in Somerset county.

My husband and I just got back today from a conference at Mohonk. It was wonderful. The spa was beautiful. There is a huge staff who are all wonderful and can't do enough for you. They have a great pavillion that they flood for ice skating in winter. It only took me 90 minutes from Maplewood. The food was great too. Book early.

If you're willing to go 2.5 hours from the city, Cranwell is top-notch. www.cranwell.com
