5 friends and I are planning a weekend away sometime this fall/winter and I need some help thinking of ideas. It has to be less than 3-hour drive from here. My first thought is the Lambertville/New Hope area, esp. since one woman is coming from Chester County, PA and another from Alexandria, VA. Any other good ideas out there? Any specific hotel/inn recommendations in Lambertville or New Hope? A couple of us are pregnant, so we're not looking for a wild night life - just some good restaurants, places to walk around, etc. Thanks! |

As always I will emphatically recommend Cape May, NJ (although I don't know how long it would take to get there from Chester County, PA--but it would be great for the woman from VA). Lots of fabulous B&B's in every price range, a couple of really nice hotels, lots and lots of really great restaurants and plenty of shopping, spas and spa services. Miles of empty beaches, trails through nature preserves, historic sites. Just so damned much to attract anyone, really. The fall is probably one of the best times to go, because everything is still pretty much open and the weather is still beautiful and all the crowds are gone. Hubby and I went last February for a long weekend and, although a lot of places were closed for the season, we still really enjoyed ourselves and had plenty to do (although, obviously we spent a bit more time in our room than you might with your girlfriends--if you get my meaning ). We stayed here: http://www.congresshall.com/ and absolutely loved it. I think the rates might still be a bit steep in the fall, but still better than peak season. We loved it there so much so we hope to go back again this coming February. Another interesting option for a group of people might be to rent a house. I can offer many, many other recommendations. If you're interested, feel free to PL me for more info. |

Thanks MATB. Cape May is on the list, but frankly, after spending most of the time this summer at the Jersey Shore (I know, poor me) I wouldn't mind going in another direction. I love Congress Hall and always just wander around in there when we take our numerous day trips to Cape May. And I like that restaurant as well. But I've never stayed there, so I guess I could get excited about it if everyone else likes the idea.

The Hudson Valley region is nice. Rhinebeck is really quaint. http://www.getawaythehudson.com/abouttown/rhinebeck/default.htm Beekman Arms is there - the "Oldest Inn in America" - It's a beautiful old inn (haven't seen the rooms myself though) and they have an EXCELLENT brunch there (It's been about 17 years since I've been there, but I'm sure it's still quite good). You could make reservations for a nice dinner at the restaurant on the Culinary Institute of America campus. Tour a few mansions -- Mills Mansion and Vanderbuilt mansion - you could even bring a picnic to those places and get a spectacular view of the Hudson while you lunch. You aren't far from other towns - Woodstock isn't too far. |

Book yourselves into the Park Hyatt in Philly. Have afternoon tea there. It's walking distance to all the Revolutionary sites and art galleries. Fabulous restaurants in Rittenhouse Square. |

What about a spa? If budget is not an issue, you could consider Canyon Ranch or one of the other spas in the Berkshires...about a 3-hour drive. The pregnant ones would probably love it. And there are art galleries, antique stores, good restaurants, etc if you all want to "escape" from the spa. Personally, I would LOVE to go off to CR with some girlfriends. Alas, it is not cheap. |
