We're planning a long weekend in/around Portland in October, centering around a family birthday party in Falmouth. We've visited family there many times before, but this will be our first trip with a toddler (Babycat will be just under 18 months when we're there), and our first trip NOT staying with family.

1. Any thoughts on where we should stay that's family friendly and reasonably priced? I'm thinking we really need a two-room suite, so when the baby goes to sleep at 7pm we're not stuck in a dark quiet room. Ideally we'd love to be walking distance to the Old Port, but not sure that's possible without spending big bucks, especially with the whole suite thing . . .

2. When we're not at the family party, we're going to be looking for things to do with the kid. Any suggestions?

T.I.A.!!!!!

Amanda, I can't speak for Portland itself but we really enjoyed York, Maine, which I think is very close to Portland. Reminded me a lot of Cape May, NJ and there seemed to be a lot of families there. Might be worth at last a day trip.

You can ride a ferry over to one of the islands (Peaks, for example) and walk along the craggy beach. There are a couple of casual places to eat by the water. We took our daughter there when she was a toddler, but had a wedding to attend, so we didn't do much around town with her. But we stayed on Peaks and she loved going back and forth on the ferry.
