My wife and I haven't been to Morristown in over 6 years. We barely knew the place back then, and after a year of living so close, we know just as little now. And I've noticed little talk on MOL. What is everyone's favorite places to eat in Morristown. Please give a general idea the type of food and rough idea of the price (reasonable, moderate, expensive) so we don't get sticker shock and we'll know how to dress. I'd be interested in knowing if there are any special things to do there. Any must sees or dos? I honestly don't even know the best way to get there even (I assume you start by going on rt 24 but which exit do you take? Is there anything more than a downtown area to see? |

Alley: As a former M'town resident for 20 years, and my husband as born and raised, 40 year-resident, we can tell you that the town is changing rapidly. An old standby for moderately priced but excellent deli: The Morristown Deli on Elm St. There are exotic cuisines as well, such as the Andaman Restaurant across from the train station. Take 24 north out of Maplewood, and exit at the Ridgedale Ave. exit. Make a left onto Ridgedale and follow it to the end (a T in the road) and make a right under the train overpass. Go half a block to the train station and start searching for parking. The restaurant, as well as an interesting beef and brew one next door, are on your left. Also on your left is Elm St. where you can usually find parking along the street. The Community Theater is great for shows, entertainment, look in the "Ticket" section of the Star Ledger on Fridays, or call the Community Theater to find out which concerts and shows are coming up. Also to see is Washington's Headquarters, a museum, as well as the Morris Museum, but call for hours. Also, Fosterfields, is a museum relating to the agricultural past of the region. Jockey Hollow is great as the location where Washington encamped during harsh revolutionary winters, and there are great exhibits open to the public, lots of trails all year, and events in summer. Jockey Hollow is on 124 going west on the OTHER side of Morristown, beyond the "green" or central square. Nightlife is getting wilder and wilder, especially compared to the old days. The Calaloo Cafe on South Street, (the main drag) is pretty exciting in the summer, with outdoor seating as ewll as indoor, jazz and spicy Creole cuisine. Time your visit with a Community Theater show, (everyone from Arlo Guthrie to the Moiseyev Dancers have performed there) but don't miss the history and cultural museums. Have fun, and drive carefully. It's about forty minutes from Maplewood on a week-end or non-rush hour time of day. Also, there's Drew University next door in Madison, just east on 124. There, a Shakespeare Festival presents plays all summer. Again, look in the Star Ledger insert, "Ticket" for times and dates. Fairleigh Dickinson is also on 124, and they have events and gatherings all year as well.

Cutter's is a great place for a good meal--- low-key, good food, but sometimes a wait for a table and a wait for service. A block away from the Headquarters building, I forget the name of the street, is a really good but small Jamaican place, with a few tables for eat-in. Great jerk chicken and goat roti. |

I grew up in Morristown and lived there for 20+ years. My parents still live there. On the cheap end of the spectrum, I still haven't found pizza that's better than the pizza at Suvios on South Street (near the A&P). We love Arturos, but Suvios really is the best in my book. On the most expensive end of the extreme, The Grand Cafe (also on South Street, but right by the "Green") is a wonderful high end French restaurant. There is a terrific higher end Indian restaurant called Moghul that is also a little off the center of town. Its a great town with some really nice restaurants. Enjoy! |

Try Muse, on South Street, a block or two from the green. Very good Greek food. There also used to be a very good Afghan place a few doors down from Moghul. |

Tulip---40 minutes!!! How slowly do you drive. Its usually a 20 minute drive for me. I must drive waaaay too fast. There's a great Thai restaurant near the community theatre as well. Can't remember the name, unfortunately.

OK, mwood, I'm figuring for some wait time at the 287 south exit off of 24, and maybe some wait time on 287, but otherwise, you're right. It is quick. |

Second for Moghul--excellent Indian food. There is also an Afghani restaurant on Washington, called Paneer, that is okay and reasonably priced. If you or your kids are into roller hockey, there is a great rink called Morristown Roller Hockey rink across the parking lot behind Moghul. |

Century 21 AND Moghul A great combination. There is also a nice small toystore where you can buy your kid a reward for "behaving so nicely while getting dragged all over boring Century 21." |

The Afghani restaurant is Pamir. I have been going there for years. Interesting combinations of flavors. Decent lunch time buffet in addition to regular dinner service. |

as far as directions...you can also head straight down SO Ave...changes to Columbia Turnpike...at the end you'll hit Morristown (under 20 minutes from the end of SO ave in South Orange). The toystores name is the Learning Express. Famished Frog is a good, casual family friendly restaurant for lunch/dinner |

Bickford Theater at the Morris Museum. This is a good little theater that does some fun stuff. It has become my home away from home work wise. They have packages with some of the restaurants in town for discounts and the like. Check them out. |

I don't think Tulip's directions quite ring true (sorry, Tulip!), as there is no Ridgedale Avenue exit off of 24 . . . |

I'll be singing with Harmonium on March 5 at 3pm and on March 6 at 8pm at the Church of the Redeemer on South St in Morristown. This group sings unusual stuff, not what you would expect in a choral concert. I recommend Nagano Japanese Restaurant on Washington St. Washington is the western extension of South St. I agree Moghul is super. |

amandacat: You are absolutely correct. What I should have said was: 1) take 24 north/west out of Maplewood. 2) stay in left lane as you approach 287 south/Morristown exit of 24. 3) exit 24 onto 287 south. 4) exit 287 at the Ridgedale Ave. exit to enter the center of town. 5) follow Ridgedale to the T and turn left to the train station. So sorry!!! There are other exits from 287 into Morristown, including South St, (old 24, now 124) but you would have a few blocks until Elm St. which is where the deli I was mentioning is located.

Or you can just go out South Orange Ave which turns into Columbia Turnpike and take a left onto Normandy Heights. That leads down into Morristown and the square. Depending on the time of day, that can actually be quicker. I have done both the 24 and SO Ave and they have timed out nearly the same. Course if you come or go SO Ave you pass the Trader Joes in Florham Park, that always adds a few minutes to my trip |

Wow, thanks everyone for some great suggestions. And the driving directions sounds good too. I didn't know that SO Ave went all the way there. I might just try the scenic route. |

Alleygator: I think the scenic route might be better than competing with the speedsters on 24, at least at first. |

We serve two restaurants in the Morristown area that seem to draw a good crowd and are very selective about the seafood they choose. One is Tim Schafer's Cuisine on Speedwell Avenue - the chef, Freddy has been there some time and is one of the best. The other restaurant is Jimmy's Haunt on South Street. Jimmy's has been known more for its club scene, but has a new chef - Luis who has a strong resume and is looking to create more notoriety for the restaurant. Additionally, just down Speedwell Avenue across from the Morris Plains train station is Collins Pub which has a lobster special on Monday nights - it is a great deal. Be well - John @ Freeman's Fish Market |
