Okay, so after another recent trip through Newark (Liberty) International Airport I'm a little dismayed at food choices. This time I patronized a place between two of the concourses (I was leaving from the Continental Express Concourse ... this was right outside it) called Le Petit Cafe. Tomato basil soup with no flavor, some kind of string sinewy chicken with an odd sauce over flavorless yellow rice.

Now, I'm not looking for Libretti's in an airport but I wouldn't mind Bunny's fer cryin' out loud. I've eaten at the "Irish Pub" on one concourse, and that's not too bad. There's a pizza joint by the Continental Express gates ... again, all right but not even up to mall pizza standards.

There are a few other places that have a few sandwiches and a nacho platter or two. Not inspiring. I'm not a big food snob but I'd love to find someplace to eat that doesn't make me feel like I've totally wasted an eating opportunity.

Ideas?

If you want a real meal try Gallagher's (a branch of the steakhouse in NYC).

Really depends on the terminal. Terminal C is best. I'm always unhappy if I'm hungry and flying out of terminal A. I'm assuming you were terminal C. You can walk around to the other concourses within the terminal. There's a lot of fast food. Au bon pain, Maui Tacos, Garden State Diner.

Bring something with you from the Millburn Deli, for example, and avoid the airport food altogether if you have a long flight and expect to get hungry.

I don't eat airport or airline food anymore, just on general principle.

I believe they just opened a Portugese cafe in Terminal C. Haven't tried it yet though.

Oxymornon: A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined, as in airport food.

And for anyone flying from Terminals A & B here's a warning:

http://www.airlinemeals.net/indexAirportrestaurants.html

Actually this is an excellent website:

http://www.airlinemeals.net

My husband and son flew with Continental a couple of weeks ago to go on a skiing/snowboarding trip to Colorado. The first leg of their flight was from Newark to Houston, then a flight from Houston to Vail-Eagle airport. The first flight was departing at 6.55am and they had to check in ski equipment so we left the house at about 5.45am - they didn't have time for breakfast at home - but the check-in lines were very long and slow so by the time they'd cleared security they didn't have time to buy any food at the airport and assumed there would be breakfast on the plane.

No such luck. They were just served pretzels!!! The plane took off 35 mins late and there was no time at Houston either to get a snack. There was nothing to eat on the second leg of their journey either, apart from pretzels again...and their flight was diverted to Denver because of bad weather. The pilot then decided to fly to Vail again as the weather had improved and they were sitting on the runway for 45 mins before departure. By the time they'd collected their checked-in luggage they were absolutely starving!

Continental is such a crap airline....even their President's Lounge at Newark is inadequate compared to other lounges I've been in.

Not to defend Continental to any great degree, but I believe that the current Newark Airport (all airlines) recommendation is to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes ahead of time to check in and clear security. That means leaving M/SO nearly 2 hours ahead of flight time. That is what we usually do and it always gives us plenty of waiting time at the gate, during which we often buy food or whatever in the terminal. (And, actually, the food choices in Continental's terminal aren't bad, but I don't know if the airline has anything to do with that.)

Continental is a world above American.

Flew American to DFW last week. The return flight was delayed 1.5 hours as we sat on the runway. Apparently the pilot didn't know before we left the gate that there was a 1.5 hour delay in Newark. Then they still charged $3 for the "snack" on board, and they lost our luggage. And when we got off the plane in terminal A, there was no where to get a decent snack (which we needed as we were stuck in the terminal for another hour to wait for the luggage that never arrived).

Oh and I had 2 toddlers with me. What fun.

If ya like hot dogs, the Nathans in terminal C's not bad. There's also that Japanese/Chinese place that is always giving out free samples of their chicken teriyaki. Ya want gourmet ?, get outta the airport.,

Tip from the taxi guy was to go out the rightside door of terminal C and head straight to the truck. Good coffee, cheap food.

Wendyn - the reason why the aircraft is often pulled back from the gate and then one is stuck on the tarmac for ages is that the plane is then regarded as being as an 'on time' departure! I find it hard to believe that the pilot on your AA flight 'didn't know'.

Airlines have to release their statistics of delayed flights and they don't want their customers to choose an airline with a better record of 'on time' departures than theirs, so once the plane has left the gate it doesn't count as being delayed.

Ukealalio: I wouldn't recommend the 'Wok and Roll' outlet at terminal A; they were featured on TV recently for having a large infestation of cockroaches - and had to be closed down twice.... I think Subway is probably the best option there for healthier food.

I never expect food on any kind of flight any more.

I really wasn't looking for gourmet ... was just hoping for suggestions for non-repugnant food offerings. The last meal I had was so gross for the amount of dough I shelled out.

And I always leave Maplewood a good two hours prior to departure ... usually get through with plenty of time to eat something.

Personally, my favorite spot is the Cinnabon and the Minneapolis airport. Right by the Continental gates. And one of those babies will last you all the way to Singapore if need be. Not that I've ever been.

If we're talking beyond EWR, then O'Hare probably has the best selection of offerings, including a couple of acceptable places modeled after diners and coffee shops. DFW has some acceptable Tex-Mex and Southwestern fare in the AA terminals.

Internationally Frankfurt's airport and Oslo's Gardermoen airport have a couple of places with reasonably good food at reasonable prices and a tranquil atmosphere. IMHO.

I forgot to mention that O'Hare has a Wolfgang Puck bistro in the American terminal.

In the last year or two, Houston's new Terminal E (mostly, if not all, Continental) opened up with some pretty good food and non-food retailers.
