Conca D'Oro in Union, by far. Not a huge selection but what they have is excellent. Its in Union Center..not far from Lutz's Pork Store and Van Gogh's Ear. Last time I was there, ran into a successful Maplewood restanteur who also buys his Italian baked goods there.

I'd like to reccommend Bovella's in Westfield instead. Outside of Hoboken or NYC, I really think they're the most authentic pastries around. I've been eating pastries from Bovella's since I was a child, and my Italian-born parents love them too.

I can recommen either Gencarelli's Bakery on Broad Street in Bloomfield or The Lyndhurst Pastry Shop in Lyndhurst. Both are excellent Italian Bakeries.

Natales in Summit or Bovellos in Westfield. We went to Conca D'oro for years but the lines are ridiculous sometimes.

I second Conca D'Oro for local...if you order in advance for holidays they usually have a special line for that. The long lines should tell you something!!
If you are willing to travel...Gencarelli's is it!!!!
(at least for my Italian born family)
