We are thinking of going to Montreal or Quebec City late May. I have heard good things about each but haven't seen a comparison. I would love to hear what others have thought - unique things to see or do, places to stay (B&B preferred) and places to go outside of the city where we could possibly hike. I am thinking of a 6 day trip that would allow for at least a couple of days to spend outside of the city limits. Suggestions and comments greatly appreciated. |

I'm from Montreal and it's a great city but I would without hesitation say go to Quebec City. It's beautiful. We went for a weekend during Winter Carnival this year with a group of our friends and had a blast. I know you asked for a b&b but check out http://www.hoteldominion.com Lots to do in the areas around Quebec City for outdoorsy type stuff. |

Go to Quebec. Definitely. Old Montreal is a nice part of Montreal, but I didn't find the city itself interesting at all. The city of Montreal was kind of dull (maybe I'm spoiled by NYC). We stayed at a really crappy place - so bad, I put the name of it out of my mind, but it was more of a hotel/apartment type place. Yuck - just thinking about it makes me cringe. I know you asked for B&B,but just FYI, in Quebec, we stayed at: Manoir Victoria Hotel 44 Cote du Palais Quebec City, PQ G1R 4H8 CA Nice Hotel - I'd stay there again. EXCELLENT location - you can walk all over the place and it's down the street from the train station, which on a side note, has a great steak restaurant if you're into that. The other, more famous place to stay is Le Chateau Frontenac. Really nice place, and of course, more pricey... Bon Voyage!

Another vote for Quebec City. We went there for a June vacation years ago and had a great time. A yummy picnic in this park that overlooks the St. Lawrence was particularly memorable -- as was the food at this restaurant that specialized in authentic French Candian cuisine. Sadly, they made the waitresses wear traditional dress. Yes, a little cheesy but I recall high-end food. Don't recall any old-school waiters -- I'd remember a guy in a puffy bonnet serving venison. I think I also recall, is it possible?, a copy of Celine Dion's wedding gown on display somewhere? Must have been a slow afternoon. |

Chateau Frontenac, a castle of a hotel; the old city, with its street musicians, see the Gaspe Peninsula, Forillon State Park at the tip, and the rock, Perce, a giant pierced rock in the St. Lawrence, near the tip of Quebec's "thumb," see the Plains of Abraham in Quebec, near the old part of town, see the oldest church in North America, the old streets that look just like France. Et bonnes vacances!!! |

Quebec for sure, and yes, if you can swing it, Chateau Frontenac. Even if you can't stay there, at least go have dinner or a drink there. Quebec is like going to Europe without the long plane ride! If you can, take a side trip, maybe even one night if you can, to Charlevoix. It's nature at its best. Be sure to visit the Saguenay Fjord - whalewatching may be in season soon. Good luck and have fun! |

We went to Quebec City for our honeymoon and stayed at the Chateau Frontenac. Tres romantique! City is very pretty, lots of history, great food. Near the Plains of Abraham is the Citadel, an old military fortress that has guided tours. Take a horse and carriage ride. Make sure to brush up on your Francais because the locals do not speak Anglais. |

Everyone knows this but it's my favorite story. We went for Memorial Day weekend in 96 when I was 34 weeks pregnant and had the baby the morning after we arrived in Old Quebec. (The day before was spent traveling by plane, train and foot to get there!) The night we arrived we walked miles, it was great. Ate tons of mussels, crepes, etc. Since we spent 2 weeks after I had the baby (while she was in the NICU) we rented a room in a woman's apt. by the Hopital du St. Sacrement. She spoke no English and was always drunk, but each morning she'd make us fried eggs. Even though we spent most of our time in the hospital, we went into the old city as much as we could to avoid going crazy. Rue de Treasure if they still have it is not to be missed, lots of great artwork very inexpensive. We still say we're going to bring our daughter back soon. |

Do try to squeeze in the Charlevoix. Gorgeous, rugged Laurentian scenery punctuated by elegant inns serving outrageous French food. One of my favorite places on earth! |

We loved both these cities. Can't you do both? I would also recommend the Ile d'Orleans, a simply adorable island in the St. Lawrence just a few miles from Quebec. It's dotted with fishing villages, each with its own impressive parish church. There are lots of nifty B+Bs on the island. |

Merci beaucoup to all for responding with your suggestions. We are planning to go to Quebec City in early June with a side trip to the Charlevoix area for a few days. We have long wanted to go to Gaspesie but it will have to wait for a time when we can spend more than a few days there. |

We did this last summer - it was one of the best vacations ever. We flew direct from Newark into Quebec City. It is just beautiful and so romantic - even with a two year old in tow! Then hired a car and spent a few days in Tremblant. Its a 4 season resort and there's plenty to do. And then drove to Montreal (It could only be disappointing after Quebec City but old part still very nice). We flew back to Newark from Montreal. Bon voyage! |
