Hoping to go to Spamalot for hubster's bday next month. I'm looking for a good, not too fancy place for dinner nearby. I don't know the city at all (he does) so I have no idea where to start looking. Prefer American, Southwest, Italian food. Willing to spend $200ish for 2 (be great if I didn't have to), but I don't want a place too snooty. Plus I have to be able to get (early) reservations on a Friday night. Any advice? |

Lattanzi Ristorante 361 West 46th Street, NYC (212) 315-0980 Lattanzi is a charming brick townhouse restaurant specializing in Roman Jewish (really!) cuisine. Formal table service, flowers on the table, white-lily glass chandeliers, and lamps draped with handkerchief linen lend a romantic elegance to the earthy, brick-walled dining rooms. The kitchen's built around a living tree, and there's even a guitarist playing in the background Tuesdays through Saturdays. In summer months, outdoor terrace seating is offered. Lattanzi is known for its fidelity to the special Italian cuisine it so wonderfully celebrates. The menu features traditional dishes like the magnificent artichokes cooked in olive oil and garlic, "stracotto", which is a slow-cooked beef and tomato stew, and fabulous Venetian-style fish stew. The Pastas, breads, and matzoh are all homemade, and napoleons are a must for dessert. Expect the average entrée to run $20 to $30, and don't be afraid to dress up. Lattanzi is ideal for your hubster's birthday, or your anniversary, or other romantic evenings, and they do lunch, too! One caveat: Lattanzi only takes cash or American Express cards -s. BTW: Sorry. No SPAM.

Lattanzi is one of my favorite restaurants, but before SPAMALOT, maybe St. Andrews Pub on West 44th would be more appropriate! (You'll be surprised at how good the food is.) |

Double ditto on Becco. We have never been disappointed by the food and they have an extensive wine list where all the bottles are $25. Because they are in the theatre district they are accustomed to having you done and on your way in plenty of time for your curtain. Just let them know when you make your reservation. Buon appetito. |

We had a very enjoyable meal at Firebird Cafe pre-Cabaret a few years ago. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the food was delish. It's Russian, but the food is more continental with French/Asian influences. They had a 3 course pre-fixe that was very reasonable & service was top notch. |

I second Baldoria! We went there recently and were VERY satified with the meal and with the service. For the two of us, we had one appetizer, 2 salads, 2 entrees, 2 desserts and 3 glasses of wine and the bill came out to about $150. If you like Italian, I would definitely recommend this restaurant. We went there after a Sunday matinee of the Producers, which is close to Spamalot. |

Get out the Zagat's and go to "Angus" something...It's like Angus McEwen or something. Food was great! It's right in the heart of theater district, full of actors and it serves fancy pub-grub in a really nice 3 story space. |

Byrant Park Grill/Cafe (continental, medium). Ollie's (chinese, reasonable). Both good, different. Very convenient. |

Bond 45 on W. 45th Street (off 7th Avenue). New Italian and seafood trattoria from the owners of Redeye Grill, Trattoria, dell'Arte, and Brooklyn Diner (all near Carnegie Hall). |

I used to live around the Hell's Kitchen area... one awesome bet is Vice Versa btw 8th - 9th Ave... I think on either 51st or 52nd St. Food is nouveau continental... very tasty and reasonably priced. You won't spend $200 for 2 and you'll have an excellent meal with wine and be stuffed. Service is good/friendly, and decor tastefully modern but not uncomfortably over-chic. It's a place you could bring someone for a business dinner but is casual enough to go on the spur. Highly recommended it. |

I recommended Firebird too. We really enjoyed that place! Why do you think it fits before Spamaot? |
