We'll be in Lake Tahoe for a wedding in June and are thinking about driving to Yosemite National Park for a few days. Anyone have recommendations for places to stay there or things that we should try to do/see while there? We'll be travelling with our (then) 9-month old, so kid-friendly is important both in terms of lodging or trips (e.g., really long hikes would be a little tough). The Evergreen Lodge was one place that sounded interesting, but curious if there might be something even better. Thanks in advance for any input. |

We stayed in a cabin in the park itself. It was simple but utterly delightful, overlooking a spectacular waterfall. We took a few short hikes (to the falls, in the sequoia grove, etc.), but mostly just soaked up the jaw-dropping scenery. Check the Yosemite website for lots of good info. |

We visited Yosemite about 7 years ago with my brother and his wife and their then-11 month old daughter. As I recall we had no trouble "hiking" with her in her stroller - most of the trails were very accessible. Also, there are shuttle buses that will take you to various points of interest in the park (El Capitan, waterfalls, etc.), so we got to see what we wanted to see, even with baby in tow. Have a great time! It's gorgeous. |

We recently did this trip. One note: it is a loooong and windy trip from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite. Much longer than it would appear on the map. The road has constant switchbacks and you have to drive really slow. I wouldn't do it at night. We did it with 2 kids. We stayed at Tenaya Lodge, which is outside the park. Great for kids because it has indoor pool, playground etc., but next time I'd stay at Curry Village inside the park. It takes 45 minutes or so from the gate to the valley floor, and having flown and driven all over the place it seemed like a bit much. Curry Village is far more rustic--but you're at a national park, so...They do have jogging strollers at the bike rental place in curry village, which makes it much easier to actually take some of the hikes with kids (they even have double joggers). My kids talked about their dolls and made up silly songs and generally ignored my constant "look--waterfalls!" "look--it's Half Dome!" We had a fantastic time. It's a little rough to have to pass up hikes that the kids couldn't do, but we'll go again some day when they're older. Check out the park's website. You can make reservations at the park lodgings through that site. OF course, you should see the Ahwanee, and if you have a big budget and are lucky with travel times maybe you could stay there. It's really an incredible place. Lake Tahoe is also fun. We took a gondola up to the top of the mountain and had lunch and swam in the outdoor pool. It was April and people were still skiing. Great fun. |

I was going to say the same thing about driving, Gretchen. We could not believe how long the trip from SF took! Mountain driving sort of terrifies me, so I was white-knuckle the whole way. Even so, the awesome scenery was worth it. |
