Next weekend my wife and I are going to a house warming party in Madison. It starts at 7:30pm, and I thought it would be nice to eat out somewhere before. Any recommendations?

These restaurants were recommend by some friends: "Garlic Rose", "Soho 33", "Terra Marre", "Brocolinis". Any thoughts?

I have the best restaurant in Madison to recommend: Il Mondo Vecchio, owned and ran by the same chef who owns Scalini Fedeli down the road in Chatham. Scalini Fedeli is NJ's top rated restaurant in Zagats and in my opinion, Il Mondo is not far behind. Delicious Northern Italian.

I like all the ones you mentioned but Il Mondo Vecchio blows them out of the water.

Il Mondo will cost you significantly more than Garlic Rose or Soho 33. Of those, I like both, but Soho 33 has a more interesting, creative menu and better quality food. Garlic Rose is more of a fun restaurant for larger groups.

I lived in Madison for almost 4 years, and find myself missing its restaurants. Il Monde Vecchio (which is an OUTSTANDING restaurant) will likely not be able to give you a reservation on such short notice. Garlic Rose is probably the same.

For a nicer meal, I strongly suggest SoHo 33, and offer a mild suggestion for Broccolini's (both BYO). Also L'Allegria is pretty good Italian (can't remember if it's a BYO). For more casual meals, try Main Street Cafe (no reservation needed). (Terra Mare is too new - came in after I moved (replacing a favorite dive bar, sadly), so no opinion on that.)

Other options in the neighborhood: Very fine (very pricey) french dining at Serenade in Chatham Boro (on the way). If nothing else, stop here for drinks at their elegant bar. GREAT Indian is served at Begum Palace, also in Chatham Boro; in the same shopping center as Begum, Yuki Hana (BYO) is good for sushi. Great Chinese can be found at Chen's (also BYO) in New Providence (actually quite close, 5-10 minutes, taking Shunpike through Chatham Twp).

bon apetit! let us know which one you try!

composerjohn,
This won't solve your problem, but you can check out the restaurants you mentioned and many more at Taste of the Nation, next Monday night (4/18) at the Madison Hotel. Many restaurants participate and you can sample their food. It's a fundraiser for local food pantries. Chefs are often present and you can ask them questions about what they've prepared. (Locally angle - Heart and Soul and St. James Gate will be present.) Wine Library sponsors the event - it's a great night out for a good cause.

Broccolinis has very good food, and the prices are quite reasonable, but IMHO the decor there is a little fuddy duddy, in case that's important to you. Check out their website: http://www.broccolinis.com/index2.html

I think we are going to try SoHo 33 - many positive reviews. Thanks for the suggestions!

Mama Tucci's is relatively new and is rather nice inside. The portions are good and the desserts are outstanding. Buy a good bottle of wine and get past the signage outdoors that suggests other than fine eating (think Roman Gourmet) and I think you will enjoy the food. We particularly enjoyed a seared scallop special and the calamari was really really good. Pastas are well done and sauces are obviously home made.

We ate at SoHo 33. It was very good - I highly recommend. I had an amazing Ceasar Salad and a fancy salmon/swordfish pasta dish. Yum.

I had never been to Madison before - what a charming little town.
