We're looking into renting for a week at the end of the summer. Anyone know realtors, etc. down there? Any insights, warnings, tips, inside deals?

Look up Midgett Realty -- they're big (no pun intended) realtors on the OBX. Midgetts have been on the Banks for many decades.

I rented a place from Kitty Dunes Realty. I did it totally over the web, so I can't vouch for customer service as of yet, though they did get the contract to me quickly with lots of helpful info about local services. Their website has tons of houses to peruse, and you can make your reservation instantly if you find someting you like. Another website I liked a lot was ResortQuest.com. One thing to beware of is all of the fees that accrue with the rental, i.e. state tax, agency reservation fee, travel insurance, etc. They can add up and before you know it you've spent a bit more than you intended.

Great vacation choice!! I have been going to the Outer Banks since I was about 5 years old. It is a wonderful, beautiful place, although well on the road to being over-built and too crowded.

Try Sun Realty - it is one of the biggest, and rents houses in most of the towns. We now usually go to Corolla with the whole in-law clan. I would love to rent down near Hattaras, which is much less crowded, but can't convince the others that is the place to be.

The end of the summer is hurricane season, so you may want to re-think your timing.

Our clan rents through Twiddy Realtors. We stay in the Four Seasons development in Duck in mid-August. Last year, a hurricane blew through the day before we got there.. a couple of homes looked like they had problems (visibly pumping out of the basements). Perhaps one of the questions to the realtor would be if your rental ever had any water/flooding problems. If you're flexable on your dates Twiddy's last minute deals (booked a week or two in advance) are amazing.

Depends on what you mean by the "outer banks"---if you mean the outer islands in the "north", like near Duck/Hatteras, then I have no suggestions. If you're willing to drive a bit further south to the "crystal coast", the southernmost part of the outerbanks which includes Indian Beach, Emerald Isle, and Atlantic Beach, which we visit every year (city nearby is Beaufort), then I would recommend Bluewater GMAC real estate www.bluewatergmac.com is an excellent choice. These towns are all very family friendly, beautiful beaches, great cheap golf nearby, and considerably cheaper accomodations (of comparable quality) than the areas in the north like Duck and Hatteras. Either way, its a great place to vacation. Have fun.

This is all great information, thanks to all of you. I'm following up on it.

I had no idea that so many Maplewoodians and South Orangists spent time down in NC!

We rented down there once before, about 9 years ago and thought it might be time to do it again.

As for hurricane season, we don't have any flexibility on WHEN we go, unfortunately.
