My wife and I are trying to figure out what we'd like to do for a vacation this year. Our son is currently 7 and a half months old, so he'll be about a year old for this mini-vacation (we're thinking 3 or 4 days).

We're looking for some place we can drive to, with a pool and a kitchen in the room.

Any ideas? Jersey shore seems fine, but we'd need suggestions as to which beach and where we could stay.

Tnx

We are hoping to get to the beach at some point but just a warning from a toddler mom...they eat sand. My now-almost-2-year-old was eating sand from our sand box last year. I thought by now she would be over it...nope. We were in the sand box this weekend and every time I turned my back she was eating it. I mean spoonfuls. Not sure if I can handle an entire day of that (I lasted 5 min this weekend before I closed the sandbox down).

Many of the NJ shore beaches are weekly rentals. I've heard Wildwood has some hotels where you can go for a few days, but I've never been.

we've been to the Mt Vernon Motel in Cape May. I like it -- it's clean, across from the boardwalk, the owner is very friendly. I love the location -- nice for taking a walk at sunset. I like traditional motels better than stuffy B&Bs. Cape May is about 15 minutes from Wildwood -- and if you've never been you must check it out. It's sort of retro and cheesey and I love the amusement parks. We've stayed sat the Mt Vernon twice and will be back again. Our friends stayed at the Periwinkle Inn in Cape May last fall -- they have a toddler -- and they said it was nice.

I second the cape may / wildwood experience. I did that growing up and I still eat sand.

You might also want to look into Long Beach Island too - though they could get a bit $y.

If you really want to go nuts and take a 4hour drive. Newport RI is nice and there is a hilton there.

We also like RI. With a toddler, like Wendy said, there is a limited amount of "beach time". RI has nice drives, cute towns, places for short hikes, South County is close to Mystic and Stonington, CT. Anyway ... we have stayed in Westerly. The place we used to stay in Watch Hill was converted to condos (grr) but I've heard good things about ...

I'll second the Westerly area. It feels much more rural, much more open than the Jersey Shore. Still very unpretentious and quiet.

We booked a house rental for 2 weeks in Ocean Grove (Jersey Shore). It is VERY family friendly and they have many inns that rent for a few days or even overnight. We love it there. We too are going with a then 15mos old. This is his first beach experience... so he may be eating sand too... LOL.
