We are putting on our annual carnival at the South Mountain Y and I am on the food committee. We are exploring our options for food vendors (local restaurants, parents, etc) but one of the obvious options is using cart concessions. We are having a hard time finding any leads on mobile vendors who are willing to do small events. Anyone have advice? |

Did you check with PTA/HSA reps at the elementary and middle schools that have fairs? I think all the SO/M elementary schools have fairs. I believe the PTA presidents' names (and maybe phone numbers) are in the school district calendar, or may be available through the website(s). |

Hoboken is the king of street festivals in the summer. Maybe you can try calling St. Ann's church, which sponsors the St. Ann's Festival every summer. They've always had local vendors as well as the obligatory sausage carts, crepe stands, etc. St. Ann's Church http://www.st-annchurch.com/feasthistory.asp 201-659-1114 And one of my favorite food vendors that i've only seen once at a fair in nyc, but you never know... http://www.milliespierogi.com/. |

Great ideas, thanks. I wasn't sure who at the schools coordinated the fairs. |

Don't forget to contact Reservoir, Neelam, Carvel, Great Wall, Toro Loco, and other local eateries, many of which have a long history of involvement in vending at not-for-profit events... -s. BTW: When's the Carnival? |

Soda has good ideas there. Also, a few years ago, Village Trattoria gladly made up quantities of pizza at a VERY good price for school and Scouts. I believe they even delivered. |

Arturo's does the pizza and hot food delivery for the Y. They also donated pizza for a David Coble Fund event and I believe they did something for Week of the Young Child. I'd call them. |

Wendy - other local vendors to try - DiPietros, Coney Island Hot Dogs (seems like a natural for the carnival), Carmelitas (while its still around), either of the ice cream places. I'm also sending you a PL |

In the past, I know Roman Gourmet delivered excellent pizza for South Mountain School Fair. We ordered X pies to be delivered every 45 minutes, and they were extremely reliable. Bunny's also did this in the past, and I think Reservoir as well. There's a very reliable Good Humor guy we've used as well. Sno cone machines and cotton candy machines I believe we rented from Party Animals in South Orange 762 8550 (we always supplied our own volunteers to run these, but they probably could do it if you wanted to pay staff). Perhaps after school vacation is over you can email the South Mountain PTA: southmountainpta@yahoo.com, explain who you are, and ask for the contact information for the fundraising VPs (who are in charge of the Fair). |

I think Coney Island Hot Dogs is closed now. At least, it hasn't been open in a while. I wonder who's watering the palm trees. |

For fundraising doing it yourself is usually more profitable. I believe the SO Rec Department will loan you monster charcoal grills and I know the Cougar's usually bought a ton (literally) of food and beverages at a wholesaler in Newark for their Memorial Day Tournament. For a smaller event Costco would probably be more efficient. |

Bob, we are thinking of DIY but want to explore other options. The food portion of the carnival really just needs to break even so the main issue is either using vendors who have the people and equipment to man a booth, or DIY'ing. Thanks again everyone.
