I joke a lot about traveling on cheap airlines, but I have to recommend Air Tran. They are a small airline based out of Atlanta. They have pretty unlimited flights in & out of LaGuardia, but also fly out of Newark. They have several Florida destinations, I believe. My mom has been sick & I've had to do a great deal of last-minute travel. They are a great way to get places cheaply. Tickets can be purchased one-way and they constantly have sales. I've walked up to the ticket counter at the last minute and gotten a flight to LaGuardia for $169. Try that on Continental. The best part, tho, is their attitude. They have a pretty fair cancellation policy - full refund as a credit towards future travel, minus a $50 fee. However, there have been two occassions when I've had to change a ticket at the last minute because of a situation with my mom. They have been so gracious and helpful about how I use my credits. Each time I've e-mailed them, I get a personal response from an actual peson with a name. Not some form letter. I can't recommend them enough. The trip to LaGuardia isn't too bad, either. I take the Midtown Direct into Penn, have a car service meet me across the street & am at LaGuardia in about 30 minutes. www.airtran.com |

This is the company formerly named Value Jet. Remember the crash in the Everglades where the plane burrowed its way into the earth and was completely gone? I do. |

A friend of mine in the travel business in Atlanta had strongly advised me (or anyone) from flying AirTran. This was about 2 years ago when they were flying some very old aircraft. Since then, I believe their fleet has gone entirely to new Boeing 717s (which are all new). Another friend of mine from DC flies AirTran all the time and loves them. |

i used to be on the bid for jet blue but now i'm solidly on the offer. and, one of the luxuries of maplewood is EWR, probably the best big city airport east of the mississippi in terms of convenience. |

For what it's worth: The current Air Tran has no corporate (or mechanical) connection to ValueJet. |

When I lived in Texas, I loved Southwest Airlines, which is probably similar to Jet Blue and AirTran, but I think has a better rep. I wish they could break into EWR, but I'm sure that Continental is doing everything in their power to keep them out. Nearest airports for Southwest are Philadelphia and Long Island MacArthur, apparently, so I haven't used them in a long time. |
