it's far too fashionable to bash neelam in here- we had the sunday buffet today, and all of the food was wonderful, and it happens to be my favorite dishes, and for $8.95 it can't be beat. |

Lucky, any particular favorites? We stopped going to Neelam quite a while back because it was very inconsistent (really good biryani, but some not so good dishes as well). Perhaps they're the type of restaurant that has a few things they do really well, and if you stick to those things you will have a great meal. |

perhaps. it was the basics: chicken makhani and chick tandoori, the spicy chick peas, daal on request, rice. nothing special, but these happen to be my favorites. the chicken makhani was absolutely perfect- white meat cooked perfectly, and a rich and (what i like) very spicy sauce. they did daal for me on request. nan of course as well. |

Tried Neelam again and it was really good! Best its ever been, by far. Don't know if they have a new chef or what, but this was good Indian. |

Impossible to believe. Maybe your standards have just fallen so much you couldn't tell good food if it came up to you and bit you on the butt? |

I hate that people do that. I've had it happen to me here too. You say you like something (and they hate it) so they put you down for liking it, and disvalidate every decision that you ever make on the subject. It's lame. |

I really like Neelam. My husband and I been there a few times and always enjoyed our meal. The prices are a far cry from 6th Street but Neelam is much more convienent.

we have had some good and mediocre meals from them. I don't know how they survive. When I pick up food there, the place is usually EMPTY |

Just do not ever order the Biryani -- It is way too greasy and has none of the spices that are supposed to go into it. I has some really good "Lamb kadai" the other day, fresh and tasty -- but the Biryani was such a turn-off that we are forced to take another break from them for a while. Too bad, because overall I too thought the quality had improved. |

Do they make chicken dhingri? That's my absolute favorite. I ate at Neelam years ago and was totally turned off, but when I'm walking by sometimes it smells so good I want to go in and try again. I go to Star of India in Kennilworth, but Neelam is much closer... |

Forget 6th St. Iselin can't be beat. I feel like a foreigner there, and I mean that in a good way. If Iselin is too far, Montclair has at least two Indian places that are pretty darned good. I have to try Neelam again, too, now. |

I agree with Tom--I think the 6th street restaurants are all mediocre at best. I've had the best Indian food in Iselin/Edison and when I feel like a good Indian dinner that isn't a half hour drive I go to Raagini on Rte. 22. |

We've never had any luck finding a good place on 6th street, but there are some pretty good places (more south indian) around 28th and Lex. In Iselin, we just tried Rasoi II-just opened. It was very good. There's lots of pretty good places down there, but that's one to try. Raagini is also very nice. |

And if you are into Indian-Chinese, like I am, do try Ming's which is also on Oak Tree Rd. in Edison/Iselin?. Their Chicken Lollipops are soooo amazing. In fact all their appetizers are delicious. |

I will try Neelam again - it's been ok in the past. But I must say Raagini is the best I've had, everytime I go there is a fantastic experience. Last time I had whatever their chicken special of the day was - with some garlic naan and a taj mahal beer - mmm mmm mmm. I need to go back again soon! |

Yup, the fact that we love Raagini so takes away much of the urgency for giving Neelam another try! |

One of my dreams is to open an Indian restaurant which specializes in South Indian food that most folks don't get to eat. The usual fare like tandoori and makhini is typical North Indian (Punjabi and Mughalai)and doubles as "Indian cuisine" which it is not. As for restaurants in this area, Raagini stands out. There are a couple of very good restaurants in Edison/Iselin, including Ming's which is really worth the drive. |

There is an upscale and sorta trendy Southern Indian cuisine restaurant on Bleeker street. I never wanted to spend 12-20 for my indian entree so I never made it in the place. But I keep meaning to. The place is called Surya and is just West of 7th Avenue. |

Tried Neelam over the weekend for the first time (I had avoided due to all the warnings posted here) and thought it was okay. Not great, but decent enough for a takeout Indian meal on weeknights when Raagani's not an option. |
