The Inn is burning down. The Inn I deliberated on for days and days is burning down. My tenth Anniversary weekend. All my plans. All the spa treaments we booked. The afternoon tea. The luxury Persian room with whirlpool. Our first vacation without our kids. I can't believe it. I sent an email this morning because I couldn't get through on the phone and as our first treatment is at noon on Thurs. I wanted to see where we should check in. The manager called me in tears. "S, I'm so glad to have gotten your email. You can't come on Thursday. The Inn is burning down. I have no access to our records but I got your email." I am in a state of shock, but I have to make other plans.
(No one is hurt but they have no idea how the fire started.) |

Shh I am so sorry! How awful for this to happen just when you were going to go away on your big weekend!! Think of it this way, it is a good sign, you weren't there, your things weren't burned, and you didn't get the middle of your getaway weekend burned out. That said, do you have a back-up plan??? |

Yes. I deliberated between several places. One of them is also near Woodstock, they have a suite available. I am working on it now, so all is not lost. But still, I'm kind of freaked out! |

Thanks RedY. That is really sweet of you. My fingers are crossed that all will be well. I booked a suite at the Copperhood Inn & Spa (also right outside of Woodstock). It was on my short list. Luckily they still had space available. It pays to be anal about these things. They have no access to their records now (at Emerson Place) and can't contact anyone so guests will arrive to a burnt down inn. The manager got my email this morning so she was able to call me back. Speaking with her was so surreal. "You can't come, the Inn is burning down." I can only imagine what was going through her mind. Of course now I have all these thoughts, it could have been us. Too many Hermes candles? Brush fires? Weird! One time we arrived at a resort in Puerto Plata only to find the main pool was under renovation. We left and switched resorts! Mr. Shh suggested we hop a flight to Miami, but with this luck I declined. |

Me too. Now I can pack (once we get our clothes back from the laundromat, the washer broke and PSEG took over a week to get here! 67 pounds of laundry!) and get ready to go. Hoping of course, for no natural disasters to strike! |

Hey, thanks for that link. I had been trying to find some news about it. The manager didn't even offer us a room at the lodge. We are getting a refund. She said we couldn't use the spa either. How sad. Perhaps in coming weeks they'll be able to use the Spa, three days after the fire they may have been afraid it wouldn't have been suitable. We'll pass by Rt. 28 on our way to the other Inn so we'll have to take a look. |

That's a bummer shh. I hope you have just as good a time at the new place. And if it makes you feel any better, the cruise line that we'd booked our honeymoon cruise on 4 years ago declared bankruptcy about 3 days before we were supposed to set sail. We got our money back, but i doubt we'll get another opportunity to go to Egypt for a long, long time. |

Thanks. I am ok with our new choice. It won "best destination spa" or something like that. Emerson Place was probably a lot more luxurious (which was why I hesitated initially!) but I'm sure we'll be comfortable and pampered at this place too. No matter what, this being our first vacation alone since having kids, we will take advantage of everything! I intend to go to sleep exhausted every night—besides all the spa stuff and sports, it is kind of a second honeymoon. (And since our first honeymoon was spent backpacking through Greece, it wasn't the most luxurious vacation anyway.) |

A note of caution....the first trip away from the kids kind of "broke open the dam" for us! We so enjoyed getting to know each other again that we now try to get away at least once every 18 months - even for a weekend in NYC. Child care is a huge issue with us because we have no family near by. But after the first wonderful weekend away I have become very clever and I have managed some real solutions to the childcare thing. |

Shh, what a nightmare at the last minute. Have had a few of those lately and I know how nervewracking they can be. Sounds like you've come up with a plan B, so good for you. kmk, would you care to share those childcare solutions? We also have no family nearby. Or, more accurately, we have some family about 45 minutes away, but they are not always able to be of help. We've gone away twice in the last two months, and both times our well laid plans for the kids have fallen apart, more than once, and one time at the very last minute. We were able to do a mad scramble and come up with other solutions--which, I guess is where shh is right now--but I'd love to know what other ideas people have come up with? |

See, that's the thing. My parents take the kids overnight fairly often (on average of once a month, but certainly sometimes more), but we usually just get dinner or meet up with friends and spend the night knowing the kiddies are well taken care of. This is the first time we've taken the opportunity to go away. Usually we try to spend some time doing things around the house besides reconnecting. This time it's just about us. |

You definately need some time for it to be just about you. On the rare occassion that all my kids are gone overnight, usually on the weekend, I'm always very conflicted about trying to accomplish something around the house, or doing something to enjoy ourselves. Doing something around the house usually wins. That's why I think it's best to try to plan something away so there's nothing else to distract you from your time together. Have fun. |

Me- I have become a mad-woman about spotting unattached possible babysitters. Adults that like kids, have no young dependants of their own, and have a family/work schedule that allows them to babysit. My occasional evening babysitter is a responsible adult woman and I took the leap last year and asked if she would consider staying overnight. No problem she said! The kids have an adorable French teacher at school whose husband is also a substitute teacher. They are young, have a small apartment and need extra money. I plan on using them fo rthe next trip.....? Again an unusual solution - but it works. My folks are 25 years younger than my husband's. They are in Dallas. We have booked two European trips through Dallas and dropped them off at the airport! The kids LOVE the one on one with their grandparents....much different than when I'm around. We have flown my brother up to babysit using frequent flyer miles. Again - well worth the "expense". I am still looking for more options. I would kill for an overnight alone with my husband, here in my own home.....it sounds strangely romantic! |

WHAT AN AMAZING WEEKEND! I absolutely loved the Copperhood Inn. Our suite was huge, very private. What a stroke of luck that the Emerson burnt down! (Ok, that sounds bad but rumor up there has it the owner of the Emerson is not well-liked because he wants to develop the area, and the fire is rumoured to be suspicious.) The Copperhood Inn was perfect. Along with three women up there for a ladies' spa weekend, we were the only guests. The proprietor took us on long hikes, the yoga classes were incredible, the food was delicious and healthful, the accommodations were beautiful and comfortable, it was just perfect. She said their guests are pretty much 50/50 couples or groups of friends (men and women) looking to get away from the city. I can't recommend the place highly enough. It's never crowded there, that's the way they like it. We were treated so well, just thanking everyone I was almost brought to tears. We hope to go back. It was an incredible place. |

That's GREAT!! I'm so happy when bad situations end up with a silver lining! You deserve something that awesome after all the stress you went through. And what a great story you'll have to tell at the next dinner party! |
