I'm usually the vacation planner in our family, but for this summer I hadn't gotten around to it yet so my spouse and kids have cooked up an idea to go to the Bahamas during the last week or so before school starts. Now, my first reaction was that it would be hurricane season, but I suppose that travel insurance could help hedge that aspect. The bargains definitely seem to be there and we have found a number of packages online that suit both our budget and our activity desires. Pros and cons? Other advice? |

Early in the month would be best, hurricane wise. Other than that, I've done it (often) and enjoyed it. |

you might also want to consider a cruise, since they can change the route as needed base don impending weather. Hurricanes can screw up your vacation even if they don't hit anywhere near your destination -- air travel is hopelessly gnarled, and that region takes a long time to get back on track. |

We rented a house on Eleuthera in early October. It was fantastic!! There aren't any resorts on the island, so it's very laid back, the people are great. There were days at the beach, some of the best in teh world, when we didn't see anyone else. If you don't care for the resort thing, this is great. We were concerned about hurricanes too, but it worked out fine. |

If you are looking to stay on Grand Bahama- definitely try Paradise Island- a fantastic little place across the bridge from Nassau. You'll have all the privacy you need, yet close enough to the bustle that you have the best of both worlds. |

We were in the Bahamas last August on a cruise and it was great. Admittedly, however, we were fortunate to have chosen a week that happened to fall between two of the many hurricanes. We definitely will have travel insurance this year! Don't know if you are familiar with the Bahamas or not. If your idea of a vacation is just to relax on the beach and do some snorkeling, most of the islands would be fine. We didn't get to Eleuthera but heard it was nice for that. Freeport was fairly laid back but we were only there a day and I don't know if we would have found enough to do there much longer. If you prefer to do things, go shopping, hit some historical sites, and go out to clubs, then Nassau and the adjacent Paradise Island (with Atlantis) may have a lot more for you. We enjoyed our time there. We did, however, hear a few warnings about Nassau at night and were told that tourists are advised not to stray too far from the hotels and/or port area. Frankly, I don't know if there is any truth to that and certainly we didn't have any problems. We had a ball in the Bahamas. |

We are pretty sure that we will do this, so I guess that now I would like some really good advice about insurance. One of the places we've looked is Expedia and they have a "cancellation waiver", but the fine print says it doesn't cover airline fees (which I know to be of the same order of magnitude as the fares at times), so I'm thinking we need to look for actual trip cancellation/interruption insurance and be sure that it covers the sort of situation that would arise when traveling to hurricane alley at that time of year. Any advice?? |

We will be traveling to the Carribean again this August and have travel insurance through I-Travel. But there are a lot of other companies. For us the primary considerations were trip cancellation, trip interruption, and medical. And there are other considerations. Check out the following website to be able to compare many different insurance companies: www.quotetravelinsurance.com/travel_insurance_quote.pl |

Eleuthera is in the Bahamas, one of the bigger islands. The Bahamas aren't far off the Florida coast. We took a puddle jumper from Ft Lauderdale, what a ride!!! It was really cool because we weren't that high, and you could see all of the variations in the water and even dolphins. There aren't any resorts right now on the island, but it's easy to rent a house. I highly recomend it if you're looking for an un-resort vacation. |
