A friend (another SAHM of three about the same ages as mine) have decided, rather last minute, that we'd like a nice quiet night away at a hotel this coming Saturday, as a Mother's Day gift from our husbands. We'd both really like to get away to the beach somewhere, feel the breeze, smell the salt air, get a good nights sleep, etc. We're willing to go as far as LBI. Anyone have any experience/suggestions? Spa services would sure be nice but not absolutely necessary. |

we used to love the Sandpiper Inn in Spring Lake pre-kid (no kids allowed). Very nice staff, a few houses from the beach. we always had lots of fun there. No spa or anything. There's a restaurant there and I know Spring Lake has some very good restaurants. http://www.sandpiperinn.com/

At my spa weekend this past weekend, a woman we met said she has been to a Marriott in Absecon, where they have a full spa. (I am not quite sure how far Absecon is.) The NY Times travel section also has a listing of small inns and lodges that might be helpful. |

Absolutely incredible. Thanks! I posted about it on that thread. Me&the boys, if you decide instead to head for the hills instead of the beach, the Copperhood Inn was an incredible experience. Two hours away, just outside Woodstock. |

Algebra, the Sandpiper looks nice and I do love Spring Lake. Haven't been there since before kids myself. Think we're looking more for Hotel than B&B, but will keep it in mind. Thanks. ssh, Abesecon is just inland from Atlantic City, found a place called the Marriot Seaview Inn and Spa. Perhaps that's the place she was referring to. Hmmmm. Might be nice. Might be expensive! Will check out the NYT. Thanks to you too. BTW, glad to see you had such a fabulously enjoyable time your first vacation sans kids! |

There's a wonderful B&B in LBI that we went to for Valentine's Day called the Sand Castle. We had a great time and it was beautiful and relaxing. www.sandcastlelbi.com |

looks pretty far but Fodors gives it a great review http://www.seaviewgolf.com/ The Sandpiper is more of an inn than a B&B -- but not a full service hotel. I thought there was something in the Long Branch area but can't find anything. |

Seaview is very nice. But it's not on the ocean. You might want to consider the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank. While it's on the river (not the ocean), the views are great, and Red Bank is great for kicking around in. Plus, you can always drive the 10 minutes to get to the beach in Monmouth Beach. |

Thanks for asking red. It wasn't looking good for us for a bit. The Molly Pitcher looks great, but only had one room. Seaview was a bit further than we wanted to go, and a bit more than we were looking to spend. I was going to call the Sandpiper this morning. In the meantime, my friend has a friend (or aquaintance, or something) who has a sister who works at a place called Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch. So my friend finally called this woman this morning to see what kind of deal we might get. We're each getting a room for $75 a night! I am so pshyched I can hardly stand it. At that rate, I can get myself a spa service or two and still not break the bank. Hallelujah! Woo hoo! No mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy for 24 whole hours! And considering the baby's been sick and I didn't sleep much on Monday and Tuesday night, this couldn't have come a better time. Here's a link, in case there are any other moms in desperate need of a break: http://www.oceanplaceresort.com Will post back with details after our visit. |

Me --- That's a good choice in that it is right on the ocean. If you are looking to get out and about for dinner in the area, there are a few great choices in the area. In Long Branch there's Casa Comida. Great, affordable mexican about 5 minutes from the hotel (much better than Toro Loco). Get something with the green sauce on it. Also good nearby is Rooney's Ocean Crab house. Good, fresh seafood, right on the ocean, a bit expensive. If you want Japanese, there's an authentic Japanese place about 10 minutes away in Little Silver called Kissui. Finally, for standard, tasty American fare there the Old Wharf Inn in Oceanport, about 5 minutes away.

Me- You might try Cafe Luna in Asbury Park or Sally T's in Monmouth Beach . It might not be open yet but Neil's @ the Loch Arbor beach club for lunch & a beach front Martini. |

Yossarian and Jet, thanks for all the suggestions. I'll write them down and take them with me. Looks like there may not be any enjoying of the beach with this storm that's coming. Perhaps that will be a blessing in disguise. Rather than run around trying to do too much in very little time, maybe we'll just nap, read books, and enjoy a spa treatment (or two). |

Meand -- I'm curious to hear how your weekend turned out, since I'm looking at the same place for a girls' weekend. Did you like it? W |

Wilkanoid, the things I liked about it: it's very close to home so it's no big deal getting there; the hotel is right on the beach which is super. I didn't go to the spa but my friend did and she said it was nice. Things I didn't like: the rooms and pretty much the whole place were a just a tad shabby. Since we were only paying $75 a night, and it was only a short stay, and I could hear and smell the ocean, I really didn't care. However, if I had been paying the regular rate (which, for the rooms we had, appears to be $250!) I probably would not have been very happy. Plus, there's really not much around the hotel right now. There's quite a bit of building going on, and it seems they're trying to revitalize Long Branch, which is a good thing. But right now it's kind of isolated between two new townhome/apartment developments, and some remnants of the seamier side of Long Branch. We did overhear someone at checkout saying they had gotten their room at Priceline.com. So, if you can get a deal it might be worth it. Otherwise I guess I'd have to say your money would be better spent somewhere else. It's my understanding that they have plans for renovation, but I don't know when and to what extent. Perhaps it's worth asking the question. Anyway, I intend to keep track of what's going on there. Hopefully, in a year or two they will have done some upgrading, and I'll have it in the budget for another, slightly longer visit. |

Thanks. I was leaning towards going there, but maybe I'll pay the same amount of money for another destination. I sent in a pricing inquiry through their website, and my email bounced back. Never a good sign when that happens. Too bad they don't have something like that around Cape May! |

I'm sure there's some kind of spa to be had in Cape May or nearby. Perhaps a stay at one of the beautiful B&B's there, with a visit to a spa. I bet if you call one of the B&B's they could give you a spa recommendation. I'm sure they get that question all the time. FWIW, hubby and I stayed a long weekend at a B&B in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and they offered spa services in the room. I had a message, done by and independent masseuse. |

Yossarian, ate at Rooney's per your suggestion. Just a short walk up the boardwalk. Got clams on the half shell (yum, yum, yum, I've been craving them for weeks). Thanks. |
