Does anyone know of a place around here that has this kind of rotisserie chicken? I'm not sure if it's peruvian, colombian (or quite possibly just a generic term for rotisserie chicken)...but there was a place in Astoria called Pollo a la Brasa Mario that had THE most unbelievably delicious chicken, and it's about the only thing we miss from Queens. Burnet BBQ, sadly, doesn't even come close. Anyone?

I've been searching for this dish since I moved here, too. I checked Elizabeth, Elmora, extensive Web searching... let me know if you find it!

Like what they have at Pio Pio, with that amazing green sauce? Yum. Best chicken ever.

Tinkrock;

Where in Astoria did you live? I grew up in Queensview. My mother was an original tenant, and lived there until she died in 2003.

I don't remember when it opened, but it's a Peruvian chicken place on Northern Blvd. Best grilled chicken I've ever had. And they make a mean pisco sour.

Lizziecat: we technically lived in Long Island City -- 43rd street between 34th and 35th aves, spitting distance from Northern Blvd. Not exactly the most charming neighborhood, but our supers were great. They've lived in the same railroad apartment for 50+ years.

Tink;
Both of my parents taught at Bryant High School. I went to Long Island City High School, and we lived on 21st St. and 34th Ave. I don't miss anything about Queens at all.

You'd almost have to go to a place like Fogo de Chao (although there aren't any in the NY region, I believe) for pollo a la braza--- perhaps the closest thing might be on Ferry Street in Newark, at Brasilia, or one of the other churrascaria in NWK/Elizabeth/Paterson for frango or picanha, etc.

There was a Columbian chicken place on Elmora Ave. in Elizabeth as recently as last year, but I'm sure they wouldn't have a website! It's a couple of blocks south of the train overpass, and Dunkin Donuts, across from a kosher Chinese restaurant.

Here are some other places you can try:
Cafe Bocage 414 Chestnut Street, Newark
Brazilian Spices Restaurant, 141 Schuyler Ave, Kearny
La Em Casa, 1259 Liberty Avenue, Hillside
Walnut Grill Restaurant, 386 Walnut Street, Nwk
Ce Qui Sabe, 37 Merchant Street, Nwk
Boi Na Brasa, 70 Adams Street, Nwk

and there are then the more well known establishments on Ferry Street in Nwk and a few places in Elizabeth.

I'd suggest picking up Brazilian Voice, a free newspaper available in many Portuguese/Brazilian restaurants and cafes, or Luso-Americano (50 cents at stores in Nwk and Eliz) to check out the scene.

I went to Pio Pio (Peruvian cuisine) in Queens over the weekend. Everything we had was amazing. It reminded me how we can use a place like this in Maplewood.

Oh, if only. Burnet BBQ would be gone in a week.

What makes that sauce at Pio Pio so amazing? I could never figure out what's actually in it.

Nunzio's seems better than any of the 3 Burnet B-B-Q's that I've tried, and they are all pretty good. Nunzio's vegetables are fresher too, in my opinion.

www.NunziosGrill.com, 2071 Springfield Ave, Vauxhall. 908-688-8040. And they DELIVER!!
The chicken is fab, we like it w/rice and black beans. The veggies are steamed, and OK. We didn't like the ribs though, they aren't the falling off the bone style.

Oh yeah, the shisk-kebabs are great too, both chix and pork.

Call ahead if your're picking up.

Tried Nunzio's last night. I agree with Mrs T - the chicken was real nice, rice was moist, and the black beans were delicious (especially when spooned over the rice with some of the juice).

That said - I'm still looking for a good Peruvian place. When I used to live in Brooklyn, my favorite chicken place was a restaurant called Los Pollitos II (on 5th Ave in Park Slope). Their (what I think is) peruvian-style chicken, served with a side of green chili sauce (aji?) has yet to be beat.

Jason, I agree..

Nunzio's was fine (better than Burnett, and nicer staff), but it's definitely not the elusive Peruvian chicken.
