Can anyone recommend a local bakery that makes good cakes? We're looking for a cake for a small party. Something like Cake Diva is a little over-the-top for us. We're looking for something delicious but more ordinary in appearance.

There are several threads about this if you search.

My experiences are Costco for something inexpensive and good. If you want something a little nicer, Cate and Abbey's is great. They did the cake for my daughter's party (had to be a Dora Cake) and it was wonderful.

We used Sonny Amster's in Millburn mall and it was fine for your average buttercream cake. We had Cinderella put on it and it looked lovely. The kids ate it up.

I am not into that kind of cake but I actually liked Costco's taste a bit better than Sonny's. Unfortunately they didn't do characters as red says and we had to have Cindy on ours.

Finally tried a cake from Cait and Abby's for my husband's birthday in February. Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate, and it was de-licious!

Another vote for Cait and Abby's... (also love Bovella's, but I like to support the local business).

If 'Sonny Amsters' is also called just Sonny's, on Vaux Hall road then here is another plug for them.

Look no further, they make a great seven layer cake, just like from the old nieghborhood in Brooklyn.

Yum!

OK, well, if you really want the best around, you have to go out 22 west, past Somerville, to White House Cakebox in Whitehouse Station, NJ. They make the most delicious cakes IN THE WORLD, well, that I've seen. Call and order.
Go 22 west. You go past the great Pelican Ski Shop where you can buy all kinds of great stuff, you go past various restaurants that you might like, such as the Ryland Inn, (see website) and you get to the intersection of 523 and route 22. Get in the left lane and turn toward Whitehouse Station. Just before the train tracks, you will see the bakery on your right. I have the directions correct, by the way, in case you're wondering.

Cait & Abby did an Elmo cake for our daughters 2nd birthday. It was chocolate, with real whipped cream icing (not yucky buttercream), bananas, strawberries and custard. Expensive but worth it. Extremely delicious, and looked great too.

We bought a birthday cake from Sonny's this past weekend with fresh strawberries and whipped cream (basically strawberry shortcake) and it got high grades. Of course it was 4 times the price of Costco, but my wife is well worth it :-)

I always put in a plug for the bakery in the Morris Avenue ShopRite whenever there is a thread on this topic. Their cakes are REALLY good and REALLY reasonable. They have lots of choices of fillings, frostings, etc. as well as many "themes" available. Warning - their cakes feed way more people than the chart on the wall indicates, so look at the measurements.

We use Gencarelli's on Broad Street in Bloomfield. They have it all. Rolls, bread, buns, cakes, pastries, cookies, ect. They are the best around.

I will second it for Gencarelli's in Bloomfield...and if you cannot get there, we have had wonderful Italian Rum cake from Conca D'Oro on Stuyvesant Avenue in Union and it is just fine (also mini pastires) I agree that ShopRite in Union has a great bakery and so does King's in Short Hills.
Good luck!

I don't know if you think Hoboken is local or not but I still want to plug 2 places that are in my opinion great!! Carlos Bakery on Washington St and Ganache which is off the beaten path on 13th st. I still go to these places for all of my cakes and am actually using Ganache this weekend for my sons christening.

Also on Milburn Ave just outside of the center of Milburn town heading towards Short Hills is another Cait and Abby's less and 10 minutes away. Still haven't been myself though.

heart rn....

Thank you! Ive been suggesting Natale's in these sorts of posts multiple times...to me, its the best all-around bakery in the general area. Sure there may be better Italian bakeries and bread bakeries and specialty bakeries, but under one roof, they are consistently very good (and a most pleasant and clean place too).
