Going to a concert at MSG on Tuesday, May 24. Would like to go to a nice dinner before. I know restaurants I'd like to go to uptown and downtown, but nothing in the vicinity of the Garden. Want to stay close because I don't want to stress about being late to the show. Medium price range, almost any cuisine is fine.

Two French places which are very nice are the Madison Bistro and Frere Jacques. There's also a Irish bar on 34th and 8th which gets good reviews but I don't know the name

Review

“They have their act together” at this “unassuming” Murray Hill French bistro, a “charming” neighborhood “find” in an area “in need of good restaurants”; service “sans attitude” and prices that “won’t break the bank” mean it won’t stay a “secret” for long.

Review

This “romantic” Murray Hill “gem” “whispers tastefully and seductively in French” to passersby, luring in “daters” (“business lunchers” too) for “reliable” bistro classics served by a “lovely” crew; wallet-watchers also tout the “interesting prix fixe menus

Do you like Korean bbq? There are some really good ones in that neighborhood. Otherwise I would head to Chelsea for a better choice.

Ginger House (7th Ave. and 29th or 30th).
reliable Chinese - suprisingly good for that locale. Good atmosphere.

The Molly Wee Pub on 8th and 30th or 29th is a fun Irish bar/restaurant with good food and a great jukebox.

Thanks for all your suggestions. So far the French restaurants Algebra recommended sound good. I guess I forgot to mention I don't eat meat. Hubby does, though. Also, our anniversary is on the 17th, so this will be our anniversary celebration.

You might also consider Tupelo in One Penn Plaza (between 33rd and 34th). They have steak for the carnivores and other interesting things for non-meat-eaters. And it is very close to the Garden.

I found this web page with some other ideas:

http://www.thegarden.com/inandaroundgarden_bars.html

Of the restaurants mentioned, I prefer Ben's to Stage Door. Play by Play is a disappointment. I like Nick and Stef's but veggies will be disappointed. I've had drinks at Tir Na Nog, Local West, Mustang Harry's and Mustang Sally's but can't vouch for the food.

Seven
350 Seventh Ave @ 29th Street
212.967.1919

Pubby but more upscale and intimate, if you get one of the great high-backed booths. I've eaten there a few times and have not been disappointed.
