I agree with Pippi...good diners offer good food. You may not order Italian specialties at them, but sandwiches, grill items, breakfast, all ought to be really good. Pancakes are another good test of a diner...as are home fries. An ethnic diner, like the Veselka in the East Village (Ukrainian) or the now sadly defunct Ideal formerly on 86th St. (German) were great because the ethnic specialties added another wrinkle and the food is reasonably priced. |

youre my kind of girl, Pippi...the Ideal was almost a German version of Veselka, not as hip. I remember taking a date there very excited to get her reaction...and she says, this is OK..I dont know what the fuss is all about. She was history. Took another girlfriend there...she loved it...raved about it. Even took friends there. We're married now. |

Love Veselka AND Kiev! I haven't had pierogis in ages - I may have to venture off my West Village pedestal and hit the East Village soon. In my book and diner has to have: Good burgers Good grilled cheese (for hubby, otherwise, I'd never even get him INTO a diner!) Good onion rings A big greek salad Good bread pudding, which is rare to find |

Loved Kiev back in my NYU days...until our waitress PURPOSELY spilled a huge glass of water on me. We've actually taken the girls to Neptune quite a few times as well, good to sit outside. Love that mushroom barley soup at Kiev. Mmm. IN a diner I expect just so much, like Hank says I don't expect good Italian food, but if the place serves a good Greek salad (stuffed grape leaves are a necessity, with anchovies even better, and pepperoncini are a nice touch), decent soups, eggs and breakfast items, I can be happy. If they have a reasonable child's meal, like the Maple Leaf, plus additional items like those grilled sandwiches, we could easily eat there once a week or more. |

I would like an acceptable grilled cheese, onion rings and thick milk shake and I want it all to NOT cost $12. |

Thanks to many of you for pointing out the types of foods you can get in diners which can, indeed, be good. Yes, I love good home fries, seasoned right. Alley, you ask for too much. I want food to be good or cheap, not both. And $12 is very little for three things. Remember, the greatest cost is labor. You want these people to make living wages, don't you? |

I drove past the Parkwood (sounds like Bushwood..."buy Bushwood...never!")...what struck me wasnt the sign as much as the faux Flinstones-era style of the establishment. But Im happy to have another diner in town since that improves the chances that there will be a diner in town with decent food. |

The "faux Flinstones-era style of the establishment" was there when the Sage was there too you just could not see it b/c of all the bushes that were in front, which are now all gone. I saw someone powerwashing the sidewalk the other day. I hope they make it. want to get a good turkey on rye sandwich. |

the faux Flintstones look isn't new... that's just how the sage diner always was. and my diner judging criteria? - soup that is not campbells - home fries that have a little bit of crispiness to them, rather than being pale and mushy - they'll make my fries well done (no points deducted if i have to ask... as long as they do it) - they've both heard of and are willing to make me a pizza bagel, even if it's not on the menu - a spinning glass dessert case (which i never order from, but i like to know that it's there) it's really the willingness to be flexible that i crave. |

I need to have my eggs made EXACTLY as I ask for them. (They seemto do this consistently well at the 'Leaf.) Sub-thread: worst local diner? |

I agree with growler! We went there once, placed our order with the waitress. Her nose was dripping and she took her hand and wiped off the snot. YUK!! |
