Ooh! Tom! Compmama! We can make challah together! Instead of a potluck, we can teach eachother how to make eachother's dishes. I love making challah, and I love making curry dishes! ...hm, *thinks about curried challah* |

Fluger, believe it or not, growing up sometimes my Ma would make me these unbelievable sandwiches (with sweet, fresh-out-of-the-oven bread that tasted like challah) with veggie curry stuffing. What a yummy meal it was....I know my boys will lap up a "curried challah" sandwich if I make them one!! So when shall we get together to cook? Where? Mustt-mustt mentions a weekend cook-together... |

Ohhhh!! I'm loving all these ideas and I'm up for all of them! An international potluck sounds great. I SO want to learn how to cook Indian, and I would love to learn how to make challah too! I'm up for teaching how to make easy tiramisu, as well as some yummy Italian dishes that you'd never find on the menu at an Italian restaurant... roasted artichokes, bracciolla, fish pizzaiollo. My kitchen is too small to accommodate a crowd but I'm glad to use someone else's and help clean up. Name the date and I'm there! |

Is there any place in town with a big kitchen? You know, like a rec center or something? |

That's so cool, compmama - yeah, I was only half joking when I said it - since curry can appeal to bread and sweet things too, I think it could be really nice! |

If folks want mainly vegetarian food, the kosher kitchen should be fine, shouldn't it? If anyone wants to learn chicken curry, it can made kosher as well (no yogurt.) We don't eat beef/pork/lamb though I know how to cook all of them. If I understand correctly, as long as the meat is kosher and we don't mix meat with dairy, we're alright? |

Well, no, actually. I would LOVE to make everything all vegetarian... yes. But to be in their kitchen, everything would have to be certified kosher, not just meatless. Products may be kosher, but ifd they're not marked with OU, they're not allowed. We're an obsessive people. In my kosher kitchen, we're not as strict, like, if we buy cereal, and the ingredients are kosher, but it's not marked with a K, it's probably cool.... but definitly in the shul's kitchen, you'd have to stick to the strictest definitions. |

Why not start off with a potluck and then do the cook-out later in the summer, that is if we manage to get hold of a kitchen that would permit us to cook chicken and fish? How does that sound? |

The rec center on Burnett Ave has a fairly large kitchen. Not sure how well it all works, but last year we heated appetizers for my kids b-day party. (Unfort. there's only one rack in the oven!) |

Wife and I went to Raagini this weekend on everyone's praise. We both thought the price was reasonable for the food which was great since we both had a perception that the restaurant was expensive. We also thought the food was extremely tasty. We will definitely be back. We did get sticker shock though when the bill arrived and our reasonably priced meal was no longer $40 but actually $60. What we didn't realize was that the two large sized bottles of Taj Mahal beer that we shared were actually $10 each. Unfortunately the price was not on the menu so it catch us by surprise. I suppose when I rationalize $10 for a big bottle doesn't seem outrageous except for the fact that I don't actually consider Taj Mahal to be "great" beer. Authentic, well sure, but not great. When it really comes down to is that they are earning their major profit off of alcohol -- not unlike many other restaurants. But I definitely did wonder how my bill shot up so high. It was a bit unexpected. I wish the beer price was posted on the menu so that I could have been a more informed shopper is all. It won't stop me from going back cause the food was SO delicious. Thanks for the great reccomendation all. |

Went to Saffron last night on Route 10. Thought the place was empty since there weren't any cars in their parking lot out front until we realized the entrance was around back and so were the cars. I ordered the Mulligatawny soup and Murgh (chicken) Tikka Masala which was very good. It's a BYO with a good selection of vegetarian dishes. I think it got a Zagat's score of 23 on food and 22 on decor. I was surprised by the nicely decorated dining room. I considered it a good sign when I saw 2 parties of Indian people come in shortly after we did. Check out their web site at saffronnj.com. I'm not an expert on Indian food but I found the food and service to be very good. |

I don't know. The place wasn't very crowded when we went so it would have been fine for a well-behaved child. OTOH, the atmosphere might feel different when they have more people dining. You might give them a call to ask. I don't have children and, as I mentioned, it wasn't crowded.

I know we're not an Indian restaurant, but having grown up in England obviously I'm addicted to Indian food, and have been making my own now for many years - schedule permitting I would be happy to offer the kitchen facilities at Cent'Anni for an impromptu indian cooking get-together |

Chris, how big is the kitchen? How many people could it accomodate without causing problems? Is Cent' closed any night of the week that might be appropriate for a get-together? That is a very generous offer. I wonder if we could make this work and also slip you guys a bit of cash for the convenience. You know like everyone who shows up donates $5. Might not be a lot of cash and more a token gesture of appreciation. I know for a fact that both my wife and I would LOVE to do something like this. |

Early on we had a weird experience at Saffron on Rt. 10. It's BYOB, but we forgot to bring our own. The owner/manager graciously offered to give us some Indian beer that "was left over" from an afternoon party in the restaurant, which we graciously accepted. It was one of those over-sized import bottles (0.5 liters?). Imagine our surprise when our check arrived with a $10 charge for our beer. Beyond being a thinly varnished scam to illegally sell liquor without a state license, it was a deceptive rip-off. Unfortunately for Saffron, this was my first and last meal there. I hope they also don't cheat on the freshness, quality, or authenticity of their ingredients or on tallying customers' checks. |

The scam at Saffron should be reported. They are in total violation of State Liquor laws when they charged for alcoholic beverages. |

Wow, I just caught up on this thread. I would love to participate in the Indian food cooking shindig. And, being Jewish myself, I wouldn't mind learning how to bake challah as well. My son would certainly enjoy it, as he is a dough-eating kid extraordinaire. And he's friends with the little noids. And we're friends with the big noids. Monday July 11 is mini Jasper's birthday, but it should work for us. Has a time been set? Do we need to bring anything? Cost? |

July 11 still works for me, although I haven't thought through the logistics ie provision of ingredients, numbers, number of dishes etc etc. Do we have a show of hands on numbers and what do people think of a small fee to cover ingredients? I'm looking forward to it. |

Yes to July 11th! Whether or not Mr. W will appear depends on the time -- which is not the best for the mini-noids. For now, let's say myself and two short people. Fee to cover ingredients is fine. |

I'm raising my hand for July 11. Mr. Jasper and mini Jasper will also join, though mini Jasper will eat nothing other than white basmati rice and the challah, if that is still on the agenda, which I do hope it is. It would be a nice birthday treat for him. He'll be turning 6. |
