The nearest beach is probably Sandy Hook, though it may not be the one that takes the least travel time. I go there anyway, because there is no town, just beach. It's a national park. http://www.state.nj.us/travel/virtual/sandyhook/ Take the GSP to exit 117. Follow signs to Route 36. Go about ten miles until you reach the ocean, and follow signs to Sandy Hook. 36 is one of those annoying NJ shopping highways with the concrete barrier in the middle, like 22 and 1. |

I think Sandy Hook is the only public beach in NJ that allows dogs, but only on the bay side not the ocean side. |

I'm pretty sure they're not allowed between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Sandy Hook has about seven beaches, each with names, in alphabetical order, but I think they left out 'E'. The last beach, called Gunnison or 'G' beach has a "clothing optional" section, in case that interests you. It doesn't interest kids from age eight to 18, which I suppose is appropriate. If you go to one of the seven beaches and find it too rocky or it has too good a view of NYC or whatever, you can move and try another. Also, since Sandy Hook is a peninsula, you can also go to the bay side, if you want to get out of the big waves. |

Tom, Does your mention of the quieter waters on the bay side mean that one can also swim there? My daughter used to be fearless re the ocean, until she got knocked down by a large wave...now she's pretty hesitant. While not entirely a bad thing, I'd like to help her feel more comfortable in the ocean again...and the bay side might be just the right transition! |

Yes, I'm pretty sure I've seen people swimming there. Oddly, I've been really lucky at Sandy Hook. Never saw terrible crowds and only once had to walk a long way from a parking spot. |

The nearest beach to Mwood is @ the end of Atlantic Ave. in West Long Branch . Take Ex 105 to 35east to Atlantic Ave. 40min no traffic . Park near the North Beach grill have breakfeast { best around } while walking to beach you'll pass a tackle shop , the next store down is where the back cover for Bruce Springsteen's Wild Inocent E street shuffle was shot. Beach has a nice break BTW. |

There is Deal (sp?) beach. I cannot remember for the life of me where it is, but in my pre-teens, I went there frequently. I believe it is closer than Sandy Hook, though I believe it to be not as nice. Hope this is of some help... |

Last year at the beach on Fire Island we walked thru the nude beach (between Robt Moses Park and Kismet). My daughter, 11 at the time, looked around and said, "ugh, some things are better left to the imagination." Quite insightful and articulate for an 11 year-old, we thought.... |

Silly question, but what do beaches have to do with dining? Furthermore, what about nude beaches?...... I'm making no connection that has a PG rating.... You MOLers are a wicky wacky group! |
