with the closing of mocca all of the truly hungarian restaurants in nyc are gone. i hear caterina's (hungarian, italian and whatever else) is suppose to be good, but i've never been. and drewdix... i too mourn the passing of yorktown... only the heidelberg, a couple of butcher stores and a chocolate store are left. ah well. and dego... my wife and i drove up to garfield this past weekend (about 20 minutes from here) to the polish store front to piast on springfield ave. they have a variety of pre-made pierogis, in-addition to stuffed cabbage, every pork meat product imaginable, etc. etc. it was great. i agree that a local dinner that would incorporate some of these traditional dishes would be great. but i'll gladly settle for decent eggs at the parkwood.

By the way, when I grew up, the old German neighborhood with its crown points around 86th and 2nd was called "Yorkville," not "Yorktown." |

We (the family) went last night. Here's what we ordered: Hungarian Goulash Open Roast Turkey Sandwich Short Stack Pancakes The Goulash was good. It needed a little salt but it was a huge serving (having it for lunch again today). It came with a salad which was fresh and decent for a side salad. I had the homemade blue cheese dressing which was tasty however could have used more blue cheese chunks (I like lots of chunks but that's just me). The open Turkey sandwich was delish. Brown gravy on top with mash potatoes on the side. It too came with a salad. The Short Stack was anything but short. And they made perfect breakfast this morning. They also served a beet salad, bread and some cheese plus meaty bits for putting on the salad if you wished (and we did). All in all I'd say it was good. We'll go again. It was very clean and everyone friendly. Plus not one person in there was smoking. It truly is smoke free! And the whole meal came to $28 for three. |

I ate there today for lunch. Started with a GREAT chicken noodle soup, but it went downhill from there... mediocre pan-style (as opposed to the usually more wondrous individual) spanikopita (spinach pie), only OK side salad with a couple of olives & a slab of feta, and a decent plate of stuffed grape leaves: $12 + tip... So It's no gourmet Greek place, but from the looks on the faces at surrounding tables, I'll bet the Kikianis family does lots of other things right. 1/2-pound burgers! Check 'em out... -s. BTW: Little Fifi will mother you if you let her! |

All this talk is making me hungry for one of my old haunts, the Empire Diner in Chelsea. A little pricey, the help sometimes have attitudes but the foods always good. Last time I went in there, a friend of mine was playing piano (they have piano players at night). This guy used to be keyboard player with Ian Hunter and Bryan Adams. From stadiums with Bryan Adams to playing at a Diner, it was kind of a Spinal Tap moment. Used to love the Kiev but it has gone downhill since it changed owners. Viselka is the place for Ukranian food now. Kind of glad we don't have something like that too close to our towns. Too many blintze runs and this boy would be harpooned at the pool this summer. |

I had lunch at the diner today too...not with Soda..I was eating while he was posting his review. Did see a couple of Maplewood's finer people there though. I had the turkey club...it doesnt come with fries, but it was made with real turkey, not pressed turkey by-product. I rate it a "go again" based on the real turkey. The next frontier...breakfast. Now I would love a diner like the Broadway Diner (not the one in Summit but the one in the city). That would be a good addition if I cant have a more convenient Veselka. |

Ukealalio I once went to the Empire Diner with my very sheltered mother and aunt (after a cruise on the cirlce line many years ago) and they got a kick out of a guy sitting at the counter who had a two inch pipe through his ear lobe. I later found out his name was Don Normal. |

Visited tonight for coffee and dessert. Cheesecake was good and the Lemon Meringue Pie was good too. The meringue could have been a pie by itself. The staff was very inviting. The owner told us that his father owns the other diner on Rt. 46. The place was immaculate and everything was brand new. I will take the family back for an official dinner.

Went to the Diner today for lunch with my 3 year old. The space is bright and immaculate and the service was friendly and efficient. It's nice to sit and have lunch in a place and not feel all crowded in like at the Maple Leaf. The menu looked pretty good and my small greek salad was fresh and plenty big. Will definitely be back with the family. |

Went for lunch yesterday. The place was very clean, and the staff was very attentive. The chicken noodle soup was quite good, and the seasoned curly fries were great. If i remember, i'm going to always ask for them instead of regular fries. My french dip sandwich was okay... the au jus didn't taste like much, and i think they served it on a toasted hamburger bun. It wasn't bad, but it won't be an old standby either. No spinning dessert cart. =-( |

Had an excellent "organic salad" with salmon for lunch today. Enough left over for dinner, too! |

Awesome. Went last night with the kids. Excellent chicken gyro, nice portion of tsatsiki and an unexpected Greek salad which was great. Sweet potato fries unmatched...better than the Waterfront Ale House. They couldn't have been any nicer to the little ones, too. Crayons, chocolate milk in take-out coffee cups with lids without having to be asked for (they love that, makes 'em feel like adults drinking coffee) and a special treat as we were leaving. The table next to us got the Greek chicken, which came out sizzling and smelled amazing... Cost $20 for four. Great, great news. Has been dubbed the "Funny Font" Diner.

I took my kids there last night too, Duder...in fact, I saw Joan of MOL fame in the parking lot...she walked in front of my car as I was pulling in (I waved to her although I dont think she knows who I am -- we've never met)...she took her leftovers home with her so she must have liked it. My kids were happy with their meal...my food was good. A few things to work out but not too bad for the first week of operation. |

Hank, Was that you who ordered the Greek chicken? I was eyeballing it as it came out of the kitchen. Next time. |
