I'd do Johns Pizzeria on Bleeker Street then head down to Spring and (I think) Mulberry, where they just opened up a gourmet Rice Pudding parlor(forgot the name). I kid you not, this place just serves Rice Pudding in as many combinations as a good ice cream parlor.

Veselka. Best diner in NY, though by no means diner food.

banana buckwheat pancakes with a side of corned beef hash and a mushroom barley quart to go...or the Ukrainian vegetarian platter. The bigos is best when the temperatures are lower...but its a good walk from Washington Square. What about Po (Mario Batale's old place) or Home...on Cornelia St., just across 6th Ave?

I'll admit some bias since the owner is a buddy of mine, but if you like Mexican food, try Seņor Swanky's on Bleecker & LaGuardia.

I lived around the corner in Soho for years...if you're looking for pizza, you must try Arturo's Pizza on Houston and Thompson. Yummy.

The Cub Room Cafe (the cafe part of the restaurant) used to have a $20 pre-fixe...not sure if they still do. BUT if they do I highly recommend it as it was delicious.

DUH - Veselka. I just posted on a different thread how much I love that joint! But I guess it isn't really around Wash Square.

I've always meant to try Home....

Uke - I read about the Rice Pudding place. I am a HUGE fan of rice pudding but, alas, trying to stick to south beach diet during the week....which might also eliminate Veselka <sniff>

LilRed - I would check out the cub room if they did have the prix fixe ...otherwise, a bit much for a random wednesday night!

great ideas!
think tonight we'll try Home.
thanks all

Sgt. Pepper -- you know Sal??

We used to hang out back in the day at his uptown restaurant. How is he? Do you speak with him? If so, tell him "white breast" sends her love!

The first time I hang at Swanky's was years ago and my hubby was in the hospital and I recall Sal thinking it was funny I was in a bar partying. Did you ever go to his Jets bbqs? We traveled down to Miami for the Jet game one year and tailgated down there too. Anyway, if you still speak with him, send him my love.

I've known Sal for 16 years! He and I worked together for several years at the Back Fence on Bleecker, before he started his business. He was a groomsman at my wedding. I haven't seen him in a few years but my Mom runs into him periodically (she lives near the uptown restaurant).

Last time I spoke with him he was engaged; I've since heard that they had a baby but I don't know if they've gotten married. I really have to go see him. Last time we were in his restaurant was a few months ago but he wasn't there.

I never went to any of his Jets events because I'm not much of a football fan, but we had some great times. When I do get to see him, I'll try to remember to pass on a hello from you.

Sgt. Pepper-You worked at the Back Fence. Were you there the night Buzzy Linhart played there around 12 years ago ?. I played bass with him on a few songs that night.

Yup, I was working that night! Small world, huh. I remember when we booked him; we were all expecting......well....for him to have a few more functioning brain cells than it turned out he had. I couldn't stop thinking of that opening bit from The Groove Tube that night, LOL.

I mentioned OTTO on the last thread. Perfect option just off the park one street on University. Also owned by Batali. Inexpensive too.

Yea Sgt. when I first got the call to do a few gigs with him, I pictured the guy from the Groove Tube. When I got to his apartment, this guy answered the door who looked like an overweight Ed Koch with really long hair. I hung around for a few hours waiting to rehearse which he avoided like the plague. We played a gig the same night with him yelling the chords out at me on the stage. Pretty strange but the guy despite his faults is still really talented.

Oh my gosh!! I have some of the best memories from nights spent at the Back Fence! (My memories are from the very late 60's). It was such a great place to go...I have taken my children there to show them where I went in my youth...(and they in turn had to show me their favorite places to go. Thanks for the reminder of another time...

I was full-time there from late 1988 thru 1993, then part-time from 1995-98 or so. Another thing I remember about that night was that each act was expected to do three 40 minute sets (alternating with another act), and that Buzzy seemed to run out of material after the first set or so. We all had a good time though.

I don't think we heard from Buzzy after that night and I wouldn't know where he is now or what he's up to.

I met my wife at the Back Fence and proposed to her there too. I got up on stage and performed Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight," then had the guy I was onstage with (Greg Aulden) slip me the ring. What's funny is that she had convinced herself that I'd brought her down there to break up with her in public so she couldn't make a scene, LOL.

That place will always be dear to me.

Buzzy lives in Berkely California in a house he shares with (I think) Wavy Gravy. His son who he was estranged from for many years is back in the picture and has helped him get assistance as well as some royalty money (not much, Buzzy made some awful deals and gave up most of his publishing). Just for writing the song Friends Buzzy should be a rich man, as the song was used in many movies (latest being Shrek) but some real s**m bags in the music industry took advantage of him and he see's pennies. 2 years ago they did a benifit concert for him at the Bottom Line where Will Lee put together the house band, he was in rare form that night. As far as I know his health is pretty bad so he doesn't play too often. Last time I saw him he was playing with the guitarist from the Strawberry Alarm Clock and he was still yelling out chords to the bass player and keyboard player.

Rice to Riches (the rice pudding place) has been there for a couple of years now. Recently the owners were arrested because the whole thing turned out to be a money-laundering operation.
Oddly enough, the place is still open.

I'm trying to imagine Buzzy and Wavy putting their heads together to try to program a VCR. Hoo boy.
