I am looking for a recommendation for a restaurant on the West Side of NYC for a special occassion, pre-theater dinner. I have a few ideas but would like some other suggestions. Prefer not to eat French food but other cuisines are all fine. Thanks. |

I prefer downtown places but I like La Locanda for Italian. http://newyork.citysearch.com/review/32894683 |

Barbetta's in the theatre district (46th St) is excellent, and extremely pricey, but in my opinion, well worth it. There are also a number of Brazilian restaurants in the neighborhood, some further down towards 8th Avenue. |

Anyone been to Thalia? It's between there and Jean-Georges but that might be too stuffy. |

Was to Thalia a couple of years ago before attending the Tony Awards. My impression, based on drinks and "finger-food," was that it was good, but nothing has drawn me back there since. |

Esca, Sushi Zen, db Bistro Moderne (I know you're not crazy about french but I love this place), Estiatorio Milos. It's out of the your neighborhood needs but has anyone tried BLT Fish yet? |

Becco. It's one of Lydia Bastianich's restaurants. We went once and was really impressed. It's very fine Italian. |

Thalia's okay but nothing special. I second Esca. |

Esca is a very nice choice if you're up for a $200++ meal for 2. EXCELLENT food, and if it's a nice night and you can sit outside, PERFECT. Becco is lovely too, but a bit more laid back and more like $100 for 2. Again, if it's a nice night, they have only 2 tables on their balcony. Ask for those. |

How much time and money do you wish to spend? Le Bernadin is my fave in midtown. Loved going to Aquavit too but theyve moved over to the East Side. The one problem with a really super restaurant is that you often want to stay longer than the time you have to eat before having to dash off to catch the first curtain. |
