I have a cell phone that I use here at home.
It doesn't work in Europe. Last year I rented an international phone from Verizon (my carrier) and that worked out fine.
My question is is there a better way to do it?
I go to Europe once or twice a year and call home every other day or so. The rest of the calls are to make restaurant reservations and the like.
Thanks for your help.

Verizon does not have phones that work in Europe yet. They will soon. If you have a carrier (Cingular, Tmobile) that does work in Euorpe it is great. You just get a phone that works here and there. Once you are there calls are about $1 per min. Also people call your number here and it rings there.

Yes, but there is a way to use my current phone, I think, by unlocking it and changing the SIM card.

It depends on the phone and of ot is GSM compatable. I don't think any phone currently supported by Verizon is. If it is GSM than you can buy a sim card in Europe and use that phone.

We spend a couple of months a year in Europe and found the best (cheapest and simplest) solution was to buy a Virgin phone there and use pay as you go. The cost of calls to the US is pretty resonable. We bought it in the UK but have used it all over Europe.

i just got back from italy, where i rented a phone in the airport from www.rentacell.com. very easy, not too expensive, dropped it off with the rental car place when we flew out. you can rent ahead of time on their site.
