I have to get Algebra a b'day present, and I figure I'll splurge on a really nice bottle or two and pretend it's for their wine cellar, this way I get some. But I need some new wines, something really unique and nice, thanks for any input, and cheers.

ML - Thank you. Nice label as well - she looks like my grandmother! Seriously! Is it CA?

yes, it's CA.

The label is famous 19th century actress Lillie Langtry. Was she your grandmother?

If you click on the link I posted above you can get reviewers' comments on the wine (although the winery's own tasting notes are misplaced. they put the notes from their Sauvignon Blanc next to the Petite Sirah). The website also lists the distributors in NJ who carry it, so you can find out where it's sold.

I have had this empty bottle nest to my computer for months!

I am trying to track down another 2001 Dalla Valle Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa). It was incredible.

Not fancy, but I like this year's Beaujolais Nouveau (only found George Duboeuf here but lots of little brands in France - seemed that each shop had their own label...we happened to be there on the release day this year, which was quite fun)

Mem, the Guenoc Petite Sirah is a fine bottle for the price. Less than 20 bucks.

If you want to go a little higher why not keep it simple and get her a 2000 or 2001 Jordan Cabernet. You can get it for under $40.

Ruffino Reserva Ducale Chianti Gold Label under $30 or The Tenute Marchesi Antinori Chianti for under $40.

Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape (or Mont Redon, La Nerthe, Rayas CDPs)

or any fine red Burgundy...when theyre good, they can be sublime (a word I rarely use). Premier Crus are more "affordable" in general than "Grand Crus", but if youre springing for a friend or on expense account, splurge!

well, if you're going to splurge, and you're taking Hank's advice, here's a burdundy for you:

1988 Savigny-les-Beaune Premier Cru "Jarrons - La Dominode"

Frankly, I wouldn't know a "good" wine from a bad one. But, I know what I like. Is there a red wine that would please my dumb palate as much as any brand white zinfandel does?

I'd like to switch to reds because of the alleged health benefits.

What I don't like are heavy, sweet wines of any color.

mtierney try a meritage, or pinot. They are a softer wine to start with. One of my favorites is the Pepperwood Grove Pinot Noir.

A great one for a gift is the '2001 Primitovo Di Manduria - Old Vines'. I got it at the WL, however I'm not sure if they have any left.

Veramonte Primus - Cab and Carregnan (sp) from Argentina. Awesome big red for ribeye or short rib. $17 at the wine store by the Gate, Valley st.
A red to have on hand, try the new 5 litre bag in a box. They are not what they used to be and stay somewhat fresh for weeks in your fridge. Shiraz from Australia is available in a box.
