Our family is considering a vacation in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware: can anyone tell us what areas of town are the most family-friendly? To be more specific, where would you guess that a multiracial family might feel most comfortable? Any realtor recommendations would also be greatly appreciated (we'd like to rent a small house/cottage). Thanks!

do you need to be in Rehoboth, or is nearby ok? We're staying in Bethany Beach, about a 20 min drive further south. very quiet, beaches tend to be uncrowded. the nearest town has only one main street. if you want more hustle/bustle, Rehoboth is the place, but if you want less activity, Bethany is nice. |

I would agree. We stay in Bethany almost yearly. Its definitely family oriented. The boardwalk is not as big as Rehoboth's, but its still pretty nice. Rehoboth is known more in Delaware as being very gay friendly (i am not saying this is good or bad, just pointing it out). Then you have Bethany, which is considered very family friendly. Couple smaller beaches between Bethany and going further down route 1 to Ocean City. Ocean City is very party friendly. We usually get a place off the beaten path in a little beach neighborhood. We get a house on the beach, and only those houses around there use the beach. Rehoboth is much more public, as is Ocean City. Bethany also (near the boardwalk) is very public too. Hope that gives you some insight! (and doesn't offend anyone in the process) |

Stayed in North Shores (or something like that) a couple of years ago. Quiet, off the beaten path and far from the crowds. Just barely walkable, but very bikeable to town. Forget about driving/parking at night & weekends. I (with toddler) loved it, In-Laws (with 10 & 11 yr-olds) thought it was too far from boardwalk. Last year, stayed 6 houses from the boardwalk. I (now with infant & 5 yr old)wanted to kill myself, in-laws had a blast. To each his own. Some good restaurants though. Lingo Realty www.jacklingo.com seems to have the place locked up. |

We also stayed for a week at Bethany Beach in 2002. Quiet and pleasant and uncrowded. We drove down to the state beach one day, right near the Maryland border. It was really big. I believe we might have saved money over Rehoboth, too. I think we found our house through the chamber of commerce who referred us to a realtor or two.

Lewes, DE just a coupla miles north of Rehobo is quite family friendly and diverse. It's one of those "best kept secrets" kinda things. Immediate beach is bay with gentle waves so perfect for small children. 1/2 a mile is ocean beach, and it's the state park beach so very quiet. U of DE College of Marine Studies is in Lewes. One of my all time fave restaurants, The Buttery, is in Lewes. You can take the ferry fromo Cape May to Lewes. 8 years ago we rented a townhouse thingy with all the mod cons for $1900/week. Biking, nature preserve etc. I'm a DE native, wrenched from my home like Ruth amid the alien corn, so I tend to effuse about Lewes... Jack Lingo, as David says above, is the primary relator of such properties. I wouldn't recommend Rehobo unless you're a teenager, single, or lookin' for nightlife. Way crazy. Much more fun to visit for dinner/boardwalk than to stay there... |

And for what it's worth, we only paid $825 for a week in Bethany Beach. There were two small bedrooms and a loft above the living room. We gave the girls each a bedroom and slept in the loft. So you can get some pretty good deals in the area! |

Tom's right. That place my family rented was a big house in townhouse style. 4 big bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths, 2 decks, big kitchen, fireplaces. Very plush. Much available for less...in Bethany and Lewes... |

Thanks to everyone who responded: your info was really helpful. We finally settled on Lewes, and rented a place from Lewes Realty. In case anyone is interested, their rental site is: http://www.lewesrealty.com/rentals/ You can download a .PDF of all of their rental properties, which we found pretty useful in our decision-making process. |
