Raw onions, jalapeno relish, hot mustard and chilli. Low-Fat Hebrew National off the backyard grill. I like Syd's too, but I miss the huge cooking tools and my nine year old says the hotdogs there are "too salty." |

Hebrew National, nice and garlicky. Scored and grilled, not boiled, please. Dijon mustard, please, not French's ("you only have French's? I'd rather have ketchup!"). At Shea Stadium, only, you may substitue Gulden's. Crunchy kraut and chopped raw onions. And, believe it or not, a cold Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. Welcome to MY summer. |

Lots of folks I know go crazy over Hot Dog Johnnies on Rt. 46, Butzville--I think, up near the Delaware Water Gap. I've been there--thought it was OK. They also serve root beer in an icy mug.....that was most excellent! |

Hot Dog Johnnies is as nice a hot dog destination though as any you will find. We always stop there after a day at the Land of Make Believe. And not only do they have those icy mugs of root beer (or birch beer maybe), but they serve mugs of...buttermilk. The kids get a kick out of the name of the town too. Maybe the former Staten Islanders on MOL remember Al Deppy's (with the giant hot dog on the roof). They tore the place down to widen the roads in preparation of the onslaught of folks moving in from Brooklyn (a prescient tale perhaps). I did steer away from ballgame hot dogs for years after biting into a hot dog at a Knicks game and finding a bone chip...so I cant rely offer an opinion on where the best dogs are at Yankee Stadium. |

BGS posted May 25, 2005 - 1:33 pm: "At home love a Best's all beef boiled with mayo and raw onion....or catsup.." Sounds like something Town Hall Deli would serve. Can we at least agree that anyone who destroys a dog with mayo should be excluded from this thread? One can only imagine what he/she does to kill a pastrami on rye. :-) |

Chicago-Style dogs (I'm referring to "Vienna" franks, which are by far the predominant brand in the unfortunate Chicagoland area) are extremely bland, so as not to conflict with their required disgusting array of condiments, toppings, sauces, garnishes, emollients, industrial lubricants, found objects, and the like... http://abclocal.go.com/wls/news/082504_hh_hotdog.html -s. BTW: Thanks, Wendy! |

I used to go to a big place in Long Branch NJ that served Hot Dogs/Burgers/ and other fast food. It had really good dogs. Does anyone know the name? I know it's been their a long time.

In NYC, I'm a sucker for Gray's Papaya and the place by NYU (is that Gray's or is it called Papaya King or something?). It may only be my hazy memory at this point, but my favorite hot dogs were from Heid's Hotdogs in Syracuse, NY - http://www.heidshotdogs.com/non_flash/whynf.htm- (from my college days). Actually, Heid's was in Liverpool, as I recall, just outside Syracuse. The two places in Fort Lee, Hiram's and Callahan's, are both pretty good, but I can never remember which one I prefer (they are sooo close to each other). I haven't been to either one in a few years. I'll have to go to Syd's over at the Millburn Mall and give them a try--I never knew it was there. I wonder if Heid's ships... |

I graduated in '92 and took many a trip out to Heid's. As a poor college student, they were as close to gourmet food as I was going to get and a good deal better than most of the food on M Street. Seems the hot dogs are made by the Hoffman Sausage Company of Syracuse, NY, http://www.hofmannsausage.com/products/Products.aspx?CategoryOfProductID=16, (Thanks, Google). Hmmmm, they do ship... |

Morrisa da Silva...could you be thinking of Max's, the hot dog place that used to be on the boardwalk in Long Branch before the big fire? We used to go there during high school in the late 70's. If so, they moved to Ocean Boulevard, just south of 7 President's Beach in Long Branch...coincidentally just took my 3-1/2 year old daughter there last weekend for her first dog at Max's. Still the same with the best crunchy hot dogs, steak fries and pink lemonade. And "Mrs. Max" (who must be well into her 80's) is still manning the cash register and the same music is on the juke box. It's still great! |

I don't care that they're now a chain and ya can get the same darn dog in airports all over this land. When you're in Coney Island eatin at Nathans , thats the best dog there is (must be that extra flavor added by the salt air and dirt). |

Arjay - Yeah! that's it. I just couldn't remember the name. I can't believe Mrs. Max is still there. I will definitely have to head down soon. Ukealalio - Nathans in Coney Island is definitely different then all the mall versions. I grew up in Brighton Beach so going to Nathans was a pretty common event. Does anyone remember their lobster rolls, fried clams, corn on the cob or the only correct way to eat nathans fries? They came in a cup in a bag and you had to dump them in the bag and squirt the ketchup in the bag and then shake. That way as you got to the bottom of the bag you basically got ketchup all over your hands. (Mom loved that!) All this peferably after going on the Cyclone and not before. Has anyone been there recently? |

Hank: When you go to Hot Dog Johnnie's, then to Land of Make Believe, you turn right onto 519 in White Township. Down the road, about three miles is Four Sisters Winery (on the left.) You should stop in and visit. Great wine!! Nice bakery in the summer. Also, when going from Pennsylvania to NJ on routes 78 or 22, stop off at Phillipsburg to visit Jimmy's Hot Dog Stand, hard by the "Free Bridge" on the Phillipsburg side, across from Easton on the Delaware River. Great hot dogs. Truly great. |

Traveling slightly farther afield, the best hot dogs I've encountered (and I've sampled many) can be found at Coney Island Hot Dogs in Worcester (pronounced "Wistah"), Mass. While in college (15 yrs and 15 lbs. ago) I would go to Coney Island and order "4 with everything." Grilled dogs and steamed buns. Just off I-290 in downtown Worcester. If you're driving to Boston on I-90, it's about 15 minutes out of your way but worth the trip. Although be sure to bring some Zantac. |

Guess what! July is National Hot Dog Month! And I've got good news about some free eats (You all know about me & free eats...) for those of you finding yourselves in Chicago next month: That venerable Chicago wiener chain, FLUKY'S, is celebrating the occasion by offering free hot dogs to anyone named Frank (first, last, or middle name, including derivations like Frances, Francisco, etc.)! Check it out: http://www.flukys.com -s. |
