Went to dinner last night at the Moonstruck Restaurant in Asbury Park (formerly the Moonstruck Cafe in Ocean Grove)...owned by a South Orange native coincidentally. It was very good...nicely renovated...a really large place with bars and dining rooms and windows and porches looking out towards the inlet between Asbury Park and Ocean Grove. Not cheap but what I had was really good and it had an interesting wine list with alot of choices under $25 a bottle (I scooped up a bottle of the Chateau Mont Redon Cotes du Rhones Village for $19 as well as a $6 glass of viognier). All desserts were made on the premises...there is live music some nights...bars on all three floors. All in all, a worthy destination if youre looking for good food down the shore. Where do you go? What do you recommend? After a day at the beach, we will stop at Kleins's in Belmar and sit out on the deck overlooking the Shark River and have very good and reasonably priced seafood (they also have a more formal inside restaurant but we've never eaten there). And when on the boardwalk, we try to save room for a stop at Kohr's for a frozen custard. Toss out your recommendations of any type at any price point for everyone to see now that its heading down the shore season. |

Oh Hank, your giving me a hankering to head down the shore for some clams on the half shell. Can you get them at Kleins? I think I might know the place. Sounds like one of the places I used to frequent in my young, single days, when I had my share at the shore. Nothing I'd like more than to enjoy some clams overlooking the Shark River. Used to go to a place in Point Pleasant where you would eat outside on plastic tables and chairs overlooking some small river, and for $14.99 you got lobster, corn on the cob and french fries, served on paper plates. It was in back of a fish market. Unfortunately, they closed down long ago. To this day, it's probably the best lobster I've ever had. Nothing like eating seafood on the water by the sea. Anyway, we like to go to Rods Olde Irish Tavern, 507 Washington Ave, Spring Lake. Always get the clams, which are consistently good, and all the rest is seafood and burgers and such. Haven't been in a while, and, unfortunately, it's not on the water, but it certainly has been there forever, so they must be doing something right! Got a place in Sea Isle City for a week in August, so if anyone has any suggestions for places to eat there, or in Wildwood (with kids), I'd love to hear it. Thanks for starting this thread Hank! |

Although it doesn't have the atmoshpere of Moonstruck, if you're in Manasquan try East Main Street Trattoria (owned and operated by Josh Buechler formerly of Angelo's Trattoria in Maplewood). He goes above and beyond pizza & pasta - best Rack of Lamb I've ever had! If you want "shore food" stop at Nagel's in Ocean Grove - old time drug store atmosphere.. and good food. |

forgot Josh's place, SoOrLady...thanks! We eat there a few times a summer (and even this past January). He's taken the Village Trattoria formula and made his menu a bit more ambitious. He's even got a picture of Maplewood on the wall. |

I haven't been there recently, but there is a really good German place in Red Bank, called, (honestly) The Little Kraut. I wouldn't say it counts as romantic, I mean who really wants to say I took my sweetie to the Little Kraut for some sausage and romance, but it is a nice place with, as I recall, really good German food.

Was at Moonstruck on Saturday night and really enjoyed the food. However, I was somewhat put off by the rule quoted by the waitress that she could not take the appetizer order until we ordered our main courses. It was a Saturday night rule. The rationale was so that the kitchen could time our meal properly. If I was ready for appetizers but had not yet decided on my main course, I don't think I should have been rushed into ordering. Has anyone ever heard of such a policy in this restaurant or other restaurants? |

Sunset Landing in Asbury Park for breakfast. The new Pier Village on the Waterfront in Long Branch is open and has several shops/resaurants. The Turning Point which also has a place in Little Silver is incredible for breakfast/brunch/lunch. |
