Finally got to try Niecy's now that the new dining room is open (we don't do much takeout). They told us they've been open a week or so. The space is lovely, with two classy dining rooms, as well as lovely party room for 50 or so, with space for buffet and bar set up. Food was excellent (we had the beef short ribs and the flounder with cornbread stuffing, since there was no meatloaf). Cornbread, yams, mac & cheese, green beans. Service was very attentive, and free of new restaurant snafus. Another fine addition to our restaurant scene! |

We ate there to last night, Everything was great! She's only been open since Tuesday of this week (dining room)... We had the Stuffed Pork Chops & Southern Fried Chicken dishes. Try the Sweet Potatoe Cornbread! Mmmm! Mmmm! A reminder, it's also BYOB... It's in South Orange behind Blockbuster's, and there is plenty of parking in the back lot. It's across the lot from the new VORO (formerly Georgio's) |

Niecy's has some of the best food in South Orange (and at the risk of being flogged, I'll say I prefer it to Heart and Soul.) If you haven't been yet, go.

Checked out Niecy's last night, and it's great to see her back in action. The Southern/homestyle cuisine is excellent, the decor very comfortable (tables far apart like her old location), and the service en route to being better (our server was new, and trying very hard, despite a $10 error on the check). We had catfish, whiting, short ribs, mac' & cheese, collard greens, mashed potatoes, and cornbread - all delicious. Niecy is doing a "soft opening" to work out any kinks as she trains her new staff. She's done a great job of converting a very old industrial space (former Grunnings factory and industrial bakery) into a charming, mid-price restaurant. And, she's also built a great banquet/party space behind the restaurant. In short, bring your family, your friends, yourself, and your favorite beer/wine to Niecy's, and welcome her back to South Orange's growing restaurant scene. [Niecy's is located behind Cafe Arugola, with very convenient parking in the Taylor Street lot behind We Got Movies.] |

Cmonty, I think our area can support a couple of restaurants with similar food. But I'll tell you I don't know of any place in our area other than MAYBE(?) Jumbalaya that does Cajun Shrimp. I love variety. The more the merrier and all that... |

ok, here's the thing. their CABBAGE was delicious. Now around March 17, you can get cabbage for 7 cents a pound, so I thought twice about "wasting" a side dish on cabbage, but what the hey. Best cabbage I ever had, and I'd order it again in a heartbeat. |

and DO get some of the sweet potato cornbread. Delicious. I also recommend the double chocolate cake for dessert... |

So my wife and I finally went to Neicy's. I'm going to spare everyone (just this once) the blow by blow. But the highlights were, the location and the facilities. WOW!!! What a huge and nicely done space. Took them a long time, but what a success. Their banquet room is so dramatic and wonderful. Great place for a party for sure. The people were all great. The waitstaff was so friendly and helpful, and the owner is unbelievably sweet. The food was delicious and VERY different than every other restaurant. For instance the cajun shrimp was NOTHING like any I ever had before and nothing AT ALL like Jumbalaya. High quality ingredients, and a smorgasbord of food. I was disappointed that we arrived so late in the evening that we missed the sweet potato cornbread. My fault, I'll have to go earlier next time. BYOB was good for me, 'cause I brought a six pack of Magic Hat #9 which suited the food very nicely. Great meal. Unfortunately it was impossible to save room for dessert because the portions were so big. And we still took home leftovers (sorry Algae-bra). A great (re) addition to the local food ecology. |

I don't have children so it's hard for me to say. But the atmosphere seemed very casual and the wait staff was super friendly. So my feelings is most definitely. |

Yes, definitely, but my daughter wouldn't eat the mac & cheese because it had a little pepper in it! |

The mac and cheese is fantastic!! Tell your daughter I'll be happy to eat her share. I'm sure they'd be kid-friendly, the dining room is pretty big (and there's an attached potentially private room that makes the whole place huge). |

Nope, I get her share! Sorry. (but she would love your little pony icon!) Having two dining rooms (not counting the party room) and generous table spacings makes it a good place to go with children I think. |

The old one was fine with kids too. My girls LOVED the cornbread. Is there a menu link anywhere? I used to love the food, but found it heavy at times. I'd love to see the fish and vegetarian options. |

They have several fish options now, including BBQ Grilled Salmon that is a favorite of mine. Don't think they have any vegetarian options, except for a "vegetable plate" that includes three big portions of their excellent sides for like $12.

shh, they have fish too. And don't make the mistake I did: Make sure to ask if their is meat in the side dishes. I was wondering what was making the Collard Greens taste so smokey. Then started to nibble on something a bit odd and chewy in texture. That's when I found out that smoked turkey is used in some of the side dishes. The wait staff was very knowledgable about the food. |

AlleyG, I always ask about that. Unfortunately, most places like this do cook their greens with ham, etc. We'll have to check it out. |

Went to Neicy's last night with my wife and father-in-law. An absolute must if you appreciate fine food. Reasonably priced and excellent atmosphere for a quiet meal with family. Food was just amazing. A must!!! |
