My wife Marilyn and I have been married for twenty-five years this week. We got married in Montclair, NJ on June 14, 1980 and spent our honeymoon in Bermuda at the Southhampton Proncess. Our daughters Michaela and Mariah were born in 1981 and 1985. Marilyn and I are planning to take Michaela and Mariah to Bermuda during the end of August to show them the island where we honeymooned. Naturally we have been talking to travel agents, visiting travel websites, gathering Bermuda materials, etc. We now turn to our fellow MOL-ers who have been to Bermuda during the last quarter century for advice. Fly versus cruise. Where to stay economically. Where to eat on a budget. How to get around. What to do. What to expect weather-wise in August in Bermuda. What they use for money. That sort of stuff. I suspect that things have changed a lot since we honeymooned there in June of 1980. What do we need to know ?

You might want to start with yesterday's NYT Travel section. there was a one page thing about Bermuda with lots of "for further info..." It made me want to go immediately! |

August is iffy weatherwise because it is hurricane season. My sister's august cruise to bermuda was diverted to canada a few years back due to a hurricane. That said it is still quite possible to have excellent weather but you should be prepared for the possibility. Bermuda's best season is end of may, june to beginning of july to avoid hurricanes. Cruising to Bermuda is very nice but it is as much about the cruise experience as it is about Bermuda. If what you want is to rediscover the island then I would reccommend flying and staying over cruising in. Especially if you do it in August (storms and rough seas). Things on Bermuda can be pricey. Accommmodations run from small guest houses to large hotels like the Princess Hotel you mentioned. You can get around the island on mopeds, local busses or taxi's. Many of the hotels offer meal plans but with the exception of breakfast i would think you would want the freedom to eat elsewhere for lunch and especially dinner. Have fun planning and of course going. |

We loved our stay at Marley Beach Cottages on the south shore. You have a kitchen so if you wanted to save some money on dining out, you can always cook in. Great location, beautiful views. |

The best thing we did is buy bus/ferry passes when we got off the plane. We explored the entire island. Highlights: Tobacco Bay Beach in St Georges is great -- my favorite beach of alll time. Horseshoe Bay Beach is another beauty. We walked A LOT. You can walk much of the island on an old railway trail. We walked from before Southampton all the way to the Royal Ship Yards. I'll find my guidebook, mark it up and send it your way. I'm trying to upload a picture of Tobacco Bay ... |

We flew Continental and got tix using miles. Save the cab fare and buy 3 day bus/ferry passes. It gave us the freedom to jump on and off and see the whole island. Being in Bermuda when there are no cruise ships in port is fabulous. |
