Well, we just moved to town and hadn't been completely unpacked yet (like say, where are the pots?). So, we decided to walk down to Maplewood Village (our new town) and see what was going on. We decided to pop into Terra and have dinner and we were really, really impressed. Right off the bat, the service was great. Our waiter in glasses (who's name escapes me and my husband) had a witty banter about him and seemed to always be there right as we needed something, but was never intrusive. The food was perfect after a hard day of moving. I had the home made hummus and soft shell crabs. There was this black rice on the plate that really complemented the crabs and the wine. My husband had mussels (which he loves!) and the steak (which he also loves and said they did perfectly). After we finished, our waiter came back and handed us dessert menus. Upon hearing that we were full, he demanded that we try something seeing that it was our first time there..."whether we ordered it or not we were getting dessert", I believe was the quote. He gave us a look over and then rattled off the ice cream and sorbet flavors of the day (there must have been 20). We split some of their home made ice cream and it was perfect. A nice relaxing walk home...great way to be introduced to the town. We heard that there are a couple of other places and after reading this board, I have a few ideas. It's nice to be able to walk down the street to find cool things happening. No driving. No rush.

Mary, sounds yummy and welcome to Maplewood. Nice feeling being here, isn't it? We've been here 7 years this August, and I still feel that way. |

I like this post. It is more of a story than anything else. The food has gotten better with each passing month, it seems, since the new owner and chef have taken over. Although I do miss the frisse salad and it seemed that service had suffered the last month or so, we did go in on Sunday night. Wasn't too busy, but the waiter to whom Mary is refering too is named Oakley and he hasn't been there in a while. We've always had fun with him. The new paint job and cool summertime food hit the spot, just as you said in your post. Can't wait to go again. Cheers |

Little bit of a follow up...trying to hit up every place in the village while we are getting the kitchen in order. Went out again tonight, as did a lot of people it seems...(the town was busy in general). Couple of places where filled actually. We've been to "the gate" as it seems to be called around town a couple of times. Jolly people there. It's a wierd thing that one's opinion on a place can change based solely on the service. The first time we went our waitress was very nice and made the meal and beers enjoyable. Last night the service wasn't as good and it made it hard to have fun because we sat around looking for drink refills and ketchup and such. Same type of experience tonight (Wednesday) at Terra. We went back because a couple of other places in town were full. The food was just as amazing as our first time there, but the service suffered. We were looking forward to being waited on again by Oakley, thanks agentorange for the reminder (odd name by the way), but it must have been his night off or something. The service wasn't as good, the lights were too bright and not as romantic. Even the music was different. It made the experience not as enjoyable. So, the point of all of this is what is one to do as a customer if some server are excellent and some are mediocre if not flat out bad? Should one let the owners know? If said owners are walking around and talking to customers which seems to happen in this town from what I've seen so far. What do you all think? |

Absolutely, you should let them know. If they're walking around they're probably asking how everything is, so why not tell them? I would. One hopes they may read this, or hear about it through the grapevine, but they should definately know. Being business owners, I'm sure they'd want to do whatever they could to improve the service they provide. FWIW, that's not the first I've heard of problems with the service at The Gate. |

We like The Gate, but we go in with expectations that the service will be a bit slow. The last several times, we've been pleasantly surprised and had a delightful server who couldn't do enough for us. Waiting is one thing... waiting for drink refils and ketchup is another - speak to John. |

I just didn't want anything to turn into a Seinfeld episode. Anyone can have an off night I guess. Might mention that I enjoyed the service at Terra on Saturday night, next time we go in...unless they read this here. Thanks for the ideas and welcome MeandtheBoys and SoOrLady |

Amen to SoOR Lady...I am in the service industry...if you do not speak up, management will never know what is up. You do not have to make a stink while you are there, call the next day and ask to speak to management. You can only hope that your words will fall on hearing ears who want to serve the public. |
