My girlfriend and I are doing a girls night in the city this friday. We are staying at the Marriot East on Lexington. We are looking for someplace close. Any ideas? |

Tao isn't too far from there. The wait is an hour, but you get to dine beneath a huge Buddha. |

Definitely make a reservation at Tao if you're going to go, but it is pretty funky and the food is good. It's on 58th between Madison and Park. http://www.taorestaurant.com/ Rosa Mexicano is also great. Excellent Mexican food and lots of variety - definitely try their pomegranite margaritas... it's at 58th and 1st Ave http://www.rosamexicano.com/1st.html Cabana is another good choice - 3rd ave and 60th street. Cuban food - excellent, but I've always found the acoustics aren't the best for being able to hear the other person at the table - I guess that's not the best when you're trying to catch up with friends. But, just putting it out there. http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?neighborhoodid=0&restaurantid=61 If you want a place to go before or after for drinks - I love the bar at the St. Regis hotel on 55th (between 5th and Madison). Great atmosphere, great drinks, nice seating, excellent service. Be careful though - usually when I go there, I want to stay all night.... As a side note - they have an EXCELLENT afternoon tea there also. I went there with a bunch of girlfriends on several occasions - it's really a treat. If I think of any others, I'll post them. Have a great time. |

One other note about Cabana I just remembered - they don't take reservations (but they make great drinks at the bar while you wait ) |

LilLB, funny, I was going to suggest Rosa Mexicana also. But the reason I really love it is because they make your guacomole fresh and to your specifications right at your table, and I love my guacomole! Hey red, sounds like lots of fun. Enjoy your GNO! |

Me - I LOVE the quac at the table!!!! I get that every time I go there. Hey - Red - they also have tequila samplers too if you really want to make it a wild GNO (Girl's Night Out). (Seriously, if you appreciate good tequila, it's a great choice for that reason too.) Of the three I recommended, Rosa Mexicano would be my top pick. Man, now I want to go... |

I think he means Gansevoort. I would second Spice Market - very cool. The whole meatpacking area is fun to walk around. Pastis is also happening. I like Tao but the area is kind of boring. |

Thanks eliz , I have trouble pronouncing it also especially when I'm leaving . But Red ,Spice Market is across the street . Drinks @ the Gansevoort are expensive but dinner @ Spice Market really isn't. If the club scene in MP district seems a little to aggresive you might try Au-Bar on 52nd have fun. |

Yes, I would make reservations at Rosa. I think we've shown up with out them, but only 2 of us - so we probably didn't wait too long, but we usually make reservations. |

I put a vote in for Pastis, but I would go for drinks on the roof of the Hotel Gavensvoort. If you want something closer to your hotel, look no further than Dos Caminos (Park Avenue South in the 20s). Also, though I don't love the BBQ, Smoke is right in the area. For drinks, you can't 'swing a cat' in that area without finding a good place. Citrus comes to mind. |

Called Rosas, and they are already booked! She said to just come in, and they should be able to fit us in. I never mind sitting at the bar for a few drinks while waiting! |

Went to Rosa's last week with a large group from Sweden and had a great time. Tonight it's off to Dos Caminos. You can't go wrong with either place. |

We figured once we were in the city, we wanted to stay close to the hotel. The concierge recommended Voung, so we started off there and had a nice glass of Tattinger. We decided we were in the mood for a steak, so we walked around and found Bull and Bear right across from the hotel. We had huge filets with a bottle of Cakebread. PERFECT!! Ended with a completmenary after dinner drink from the maitre di'. Stumbled back to the hotel a few hours later. The next day we went to St Bart's for brunch. Great place to sit outside enjoy strawberry sparklers and chill. Then it was off to Mulberry street for shopping, eating and beer!! Thanks everyone for the recommendations! |

Yowzzaa, First Vong, then the Bull and Bear (which some of you may not know is in Waldorf Astoria) for dinner. Both of those places are WAY out of my league, price wise. I would have NEVER in a million years have thought to suggest either of those places to anyone. If I knew money wasn't an issue, I might have suggested...awww who am I kidding, I'm not familiar with anywhere that expensive or nice. |

Went to Tao last week with some friends from the left coast. It definitely is a happening, funky place for the young and good looking (I must have looked out of place ). We didn't wait long for our table. The food was very good (not great) but our server was surly and obnoxious. It certainly was pricey...about $75 each for 2 drinks ($7 for bottled beer), app, entree, some shared desserts. After having the early dinner at Amanda's (Hoboken) for $28 FOR TWO PEOPLE, none of these other places seem worth the price. |

We almost ended up at Tao, but the concierge said it would be too crowded, to try Voung. So many places, so little time! |
