We're going to Italy next month and will be spending our first week near Venice (our son wanted to stay at a Eurocamp holiday park there as he enjoyed it so much when he was little). We are flying into Venice and flying back from Rome and are renting a car. We have already been to Tuscany so our thoughts are maybe to drive south via Umbria and spend a night or two in one of the towns there. I'd really like to see Pompeii but I understand that Naples is rife for crime (car theft, pickpockets, handbag snatching etc.) so perhaps Sorrento may be a nicer place to stay? Again this would be for a night or two, then we will head up to Rome for a couple of nights before heading off to the airport. I love http://www.tripadvisor.com but if anyone has personal recommendations of any places they've stayed at I'd be very grateful. (We are a family of 4 with older children, 21 & 16). To be honest, we're not interested in stuffy, terribly upscale places - we will be out and about so just really need somewhere clean and comfortable. |

We have stayed at a private apartment (with host) that is in a pleasant Rome neighborhood. If you are interested I will get the number for you. |

Sorrento is a much better place to stay than Naples. We stayed there in a midscale place by the edge of the cliff with the ocean below and it was awesome! Unfortunately, I am struggling to remember the name of the place since it was so many years back. Pompeii is a nice day trip from there (by train). I do remember that we bought the Rick Steves book for Italy and stayed at hotels in Rome, Sorrento, Florence and Venice that he recommends in his book and we were not disappointed with any of his recommendations. A trip to Barnes & Noble will be worth it |
